The one thing Manchester City lack is a local born hero and it's probably the reason a lot of people dismiss them as simply buying success despite spending less than Man Utd.

You think of Chelsea, you think of John Terry, London born and bred.
Spurs - Harry Kane, London born and bred.
Liverpool - Steven Gerrard, a scouser
Man Utd - Paul Scholes, Salford lad plus other locals who played under Fergie.

Arsenal I can't think of any since Ian Wright, but they've fallen short for some time. The lack of a local star at the Emirates will not have helped.

All but one member of the 15 man Celtic squad that won the European Cup were born within 10 miles of Celtic Park in Glasgow, we certainly won't see that again, but to have no local heroes at all could be to the detriment of the sport in the long run. Presumably they will become increasingly more rare.

Views expressed on here are so out of date. How can anyone say in view of English success this last year in world competitions up to the age of 21 that our young players have not learned from the example of foreign talent? Give it time and this young talent will work its way through. Look at the job Pocchetino is doing in bringing on British talent.
The Scots are a different matter. So poor is the standard of football that any self-respecting South American wouldn't give that league consideration.

And here was me thinking that it was going to be the Freight Rover Trophy or whatever its called now that was supposed to showcase all the young talent in our big leagues and lead to a better standard of young player. How's that working out? It's good to see all the top clubs taking it seriously has one of them actually got out of a group stage yet?!

That has naff all to do with it. Young footballers being put up against established pros is always going to be a difficult ask. They may be good footballers but won’t have the nous etc that players in there late 20’s early 30’s have developed.
