If Shinnie did go to left back, the midfield of the last 2 seasons of McLean, Jack, Shinnie and Christie being downgraded to Ball, Gleeson, Tansey and Forrester would hurt a wee bit....

We only had that midfield for 6 months.

Also, we have a current midfield options of:-
Shinnie, McGinn, GMS, Gleeson, Forrester, Ferguson, Ball, Ross, Wright, Campbell.

Actually, we seem to have an abundance of players who can play in midfield, so could it release Shinnie to defence?

Cos he can play a forward pass, doesn't always go backwards etc etc?

Maybe not 100 times, maybe 70 or 80 times the player, then. 🙄🙄

Yeah Ball is so good his English 3rd tier club has let us take him on loan for 2 years.

Edit Didn’t realise Rotherham got promoted to the championship last season.

Central Midfield 3 you would not have McGinn, GMS or Wright in there.

That leaves Shinnie, Gleeson, Forrester, Ferguson, Ball, Ross and Campbell

Now I Like the young lads potential but feasibly only one of Ferguson, Ross and Campbell would play at a time if at all (Derek doesn't play them if he doesn't fully trust them)

SO that leaves Ball, Forrester, Gleeson, Shinnie

None of us know how Gleeson and Forrester will be. They could be ****e they could be great. What we do know is Ball is average. Blows hot and cold, albeit he finished the season ok (beside 2 good CM's in Shinnie and McLean) - Meanwhile Shinnie was established in the middle of the park and allowed McLean and Christie to play....

But yeah, lets stick him at Left Back and play untried signees, average Ball and young inexperienced lads who have shown mere flashes.

Plus Shinnie himself wants to play Centre Midfield. Players play better when they play where they want to play.

If Ball plays in the holding midfield role and plays to the standard he did in the last few games of last season, I'm happy for him to be here. I can't see his signing allowing Shinnie to move to left back though. Shinnie is our one and only tried, tested, reliably consistent, quality central midfielder. In the big games we need him in central midfield and at left back, the problem is there's only one of him. In the lesser games we're as well having him in midfield because he impacts the game more and Considine can just about get by in them.

Gleeson must be decent enough to have been capped fairly recently for ROI - the doubt I have about him is whether he's going to be injury prone and never really get going. Ferguson is a promising young player by all accounts - but that really just puts him on a par with the likes of Dean Campbell, Frank Ross etc - he might make it, he might not. Forrester appears to have shown promise a couple years ago but for some reason hasn't fulfilled it, so he's one that could go either way too. So the business done so far might be great, but either way it's still slightly uninspiring.

At least last year there was some excitement about players like GMS, May, Stewart and Christie joining, even if they didn't all deliver. We need at least one or two arrivals of that ilk to give us a reason to be hopeful.

Wasn't going to post anything about the loan for ball but its such a lazy loan signing! If its for RB then just clean F•uck off! Wouldn't be surprised if thats it for this week.
