Don’t mean to come across like that! It’s a very dicey business and some papers will take it to the limit, without actually being in contempt. You’ll often read that police are questioning, say, a 37-year-old man in connection with their inquiries. Reporters will dig out the name and gather info from friends, neighbours etc to build up a background to be used if and when someone is convicted. But once the individual is named by police and charged they can say no more. Same with previous convictions. You can’t mention them and they won’t be referred to in court until or if an accused is found guilty or pleads guilty when the judge will consider them in deciding on a sentence

    You didn't I was interested.

How did the police get away with thon yew tree then?

It looked to me that they got one accuser, then charged and appealed for others to come forward.

Or is it different for them?

Nae wonder a guid lawyer is worth their weight in gold.

Jim Davidson case ( Jdfc kens mair a boot it than me) seemed to be another unbelievable liberty.

The police will often name high-profile individuals on the grounds of public interest (eg to encourage any other possible victims to come forward) and naturally the media will follow it up. But once they are also charged there can be no detailed comment. Personally I don’t believe any suspect should be named until they are charged, regardless of their standing
