After a club relegation season for me, I do take consolation in looking forward to another summer World cup and it also counts that we/England are there and are surely thinking we'll do better than just the group stages this time.
All my summers avatars will be of England home & away shirts by the way!.
I wasn't quite old enough to remember WCup '78 when we didn't qualify, but the memories of failing to get to WCup '94 in America of all places, they are still tough now when I think back to them.

74 was a killer, the drama of the Poland game was intense, and King Kev came with a few inches of saving us...

First one I remember was 82 and Robson scoring after 26secs v France.

Remember everyone supporting Billy Bingham's Northern Ireland too.

Would have too if he hadn't been pushed in the back............. which should have been a penalty.

What a night that must have been eh against Poland in '73, and I say this after seeing it so many times now on the telly and hearing Cloughie's negative comments about their keeper Jan Tomasewski. How Poland scraped that draw that night at Wembley is down to pure luck.
And after looking at the stats, we needed to beat that appalling dirty Italy team by at least 3 didn't we at Wembley in '77. As it turned out though the 2-0 win wasn't enough.

the away game against poland was worse, it was inconceivable that we could lose against a pack of unknown commies but we just looked a bit ordinary and they looked well organised and full of talent

No Andy, Polskiland wore white n red, and we wore yellow n navy for some weird reason.
I don't see why we should change our colours from traditional white or red, with navy as a third colour.
