Guardian article on the McLean Years

It's an old article now - April 2017 - but if you missed it first time round it's a very good in depth piece about that time.
A must read for any United fan really.

Didn't read it all, but one of the most telling attributes to the man is the third picture at the dugout.

The most intense game in the clubs history and he has Sturrock and Bannon in the dugout having been subbed. Who would have thought that maybe two of the most influential players would be hooked in such a game, but McLeans tactical nouse knew he had to do that and clearly as a team the players respected the manager and that decision.

Where the players named were ready to leap with joy with seconds to go, McLean is still intense on the game and working out what has to be done.

Is it possible we will ever see a man as great again in charge...... doubt it, we were privileged to have him. Time has told how good he really was.

    That's not Bannon...think it's John Reilly

Yes, however my real point is the intensity of the man right through till the 90th minute and understanding of the players of the reasons.

“They gave us a lot of width, and without width you’ll not create many goals” wise words from a man who understood the game, pity all of our recent managers hadn’t this same understanding

Some great quotes from the players there "pointing at you in the shower" etc
The pic from the Stadio Olympico tells you just how hostile that day was on the pitch never mind off it.
