    UFO over Clitheroe

A very strange thing happened on Wednesday night, probably around 1 am. I was fast asleep when Mrs S woke me up asking what that noise was, I was still half asleep and I could hear this sort of throbbing, turbine type sound and I immediately was wondering what sort of appliance we had in the house that could make that sort of sound, I thought maybe it was the CH boiler about to explode, and then the missus asked is it an aeroplane or a helicopter. I could tell it certainly wasn't a helicopter, nor was it coming from inside the house, and I began to think it must be some sort of plane, then the sound moved away and faded, as indeed an aeroplane sound would. I went straight back to sleep and thought no more about it until last night when Mrs S again asked what I thought it was. I had totally forgotten about it, but when she asked all I could recall was my first thought that it was something inside the house and not an aeroplane. The strange thing is that we get loads of different planes over here, at differing heights, and I know the sound each one makes. So why did I not immediately identify this sound as an aircraft ? Simply because it didn't sound like any aircraft I'd ever heard before. So what was it, no idea, in which case I suppose it was a UFO. Not saying it was from outer space or anything, but I couldn't identify that sound, so how else to classify it ?

UFO stands for unidentified flying object, no requirement for them to come from outer space, they can come from anywhere, it just means you can't identify what they are. It certainly wasn't a neighbour, unless one of them has learnt how to fly and disappear into the distance.

After careful assessment, it was probably a drone. Have you any nosey neighbours?

No I haven't actually seen any of the neighbours to ask yet OC, I will when I get the chance, but it's not something I'm that bothered about, I just thought it a very strange occurrence and worth mentioning on here just for interest.

If it was a drone BT it must have been a big one, but I assume the military ones are much bigger than any I've ever seen locally. We do get test flights over here occasionally from BAE at Salmesbury/Warton, I suppose it's a possibility they were testing a military drone, but I've always assumed they'd be fairly quiet, this thing was making a fair bit of noise, and would they be flying them at one in the morning ? I suppose if it was something new they were testing and they didn't want it to be seen they might, but it does seem a bit fanciful.

In the 80's a work mate of mine saw a UFO whilst walking his dog over Stacksteads moor. He reported it to the local paper who ran a large article about it.

Shortly afterwards the got a visit from the MOD who asked him nicely to keep his gob shut. There have been many sightings around Stacksteads over the years.

Sounds like it could be a test flight for a new plane...or the Ruskies managed to get through our defences.

Another mate of mine (see, I AM popular) used to be an air traffic controller for the RAF. He tells me that hardly a night goes by without the "bears" testing our air defences, and we have to scramble a fighter to escort them off the premises.

My Dad used to work on the railway and do shift work. Around 1AM my Mum looked out of the window to see if he was on his way back, and she saw a cigar shaped object hovering over the houses on the other side of the street. It had many lights and it didn't make any noise. She passed out and was woken by my Dad when he got home. She was not going to mention it to anyone but there were many reports of UFO's being seen in the area at the same time.

I am certain that there is intelligent life out there but I am equally certain that they are not visiting us.
