I didn't even bother learning to drive until my late 30's

But my mate used to have a mark 1 Cortina when I was 15-16

We used to put 50p worth of petrol in it at a time.

As much as i love classic fords and i really do, they have only come to be loved as time goes on. They were cars that rusted like hell, had basic interiors and didnt last as long. Cars these days are manufactured to meet high safety standards, which no doubt is compromising on design. A mk4 RS turbo could do 0-60 in 8.2 seconds... that can now be achieved by even the most basic cars. I agree though, most modern era cars dont look great in terms of design.

I bought a MK4 Escort RS turbo in 1999 and it cost £700. Sold it for scrap about 2 years later because it wasnt worth the hassle of sorting it. That car would fetch 5-7K now all because they are sought after. My memories of earlier fords werent all that great. Sure they looked the part and were 'quick' for their time, but i now own a Focus and certainly wouldnt swap it out for an old RS. If i could still own an RS i would, but it would be for novelty factor only.

We love to look back on things and think of a simpler time where everything looked amazing, but I remember my mum having a mk2 escort and i still remember my mates slagging me off because it was a 'rust bucket'. The thing was only 5 years old at the time and yet it look really old and rusty. Modern day cars last much longer, are safer and very rarely rust. The issue is of course they dont age well in terms of design. I personally dont think any car has look good since the Mk2 golf went out of production.

    Funnily enough I have a 4x4 hybrid.

Anyway, the Escort Cosworth was a beast indeed. My mate had a Sierra Cosworth and folk used to wave at him.

My favourite car was my racing green Vauxhall Calibra. First car I had with power steering. I was a ****ing ticket.

Fitever happened to sunroofs. Hardly any car has them nowadays.

I mind when I had an Audi with an electric sunroof. One winters day when two feet of snow covered my car, I pressed the wrong button and got covered in snow

    Air conditioning has replaced sunroofs.

One of the many problems with hybrids is that they are very heavy. You have to humf around the battery and electric motors as well as a petrol engine.
