There was a club in Barnsley called Baurgh FC who had run for 20 years , they started out as a 9th division club at sunday morning level but gradually made their way up the leagues and then eventually formed a junior team which then progressed across several age groups .

Parents and volunteers put their heart and soul in to the club , the kids went to play in tournaments in spain and germany fully funded by the activities of the above and the hours they spent fund raising for the kids .

The Shaw Lane owner wanted to start his own team and used Baurgh to get a start after convincing the committee he was willing to invest money in to the club .

Aye he was good on his word except he went around throwing wads of cash at talent from both inside the town and elsewhere , he didn't give a shyte about the junior set up at Baurgh , the club became his toy and the volunteers and obviously the parents walked away

That's how Shaw Lane began so as you can imagine none of us are losing much sleep over Craig Wood and his ambitions going tyts up .

The owner didn't need to close the club down in my opinion , all he needed to do was scale back the investment and let the club perform at their natural level .

His ambitions were flawed from the outset because he was trying to muscle in and compete with a club who have 131 years of history behind it in a town that isn't big enough to support two clubs .

BFC didn't kill Shaw Lane Craig Wood did with his unrealistic ambitions and ego .

He said right from the start he was here to challenge BFC so it wasn't going to be met with anything other than hostility .

It's easy to laugh at their boast but then again Fleetwood Town started in similar fashion and ended up in league one , it's not impossible and we don't want another club in this town threatening our support .
Cant see the problem, quite a few towns and cities have the towns name in them

He said in the interview that Shaw Lane would continue with their kids/youth teams, etc, but would not compete in the football league "pyramid", or words to that effect

The club objected gm and the relevant authorities decided in our favour so they must have agreed that we had a case .

It wasn't our decision , we simply raised an objection .

By the way, it's annoying when the media call Bradford City just "Bradford". When I was a kid, people would have assumed that "Bradford" meant Bradford Park Avenue (who still exist), and not Bradford City.

The notion that Barnsley FC wanted to ‘protect its brand’ makes no sense at all.

Which ‘brand’ is that? Was the fear that supporters would buy season tickets for the wrong club by mistake? I've not heard of that sort of thing happening in Bristol or Manchester.

I know nothing of the owner of Shaw Lane, but the notion of Barnsley ’protecting its brand’, smells of a big club choking its smaller neighbour to death from a fear of competition. Whether Barnsley has 131 years, 131 months or 131 weeks of history should have nothing to do with it.
