Could call it 4-4-2 with a diamond, but this team is designed to attack. Bryan Robson steps into the Nobby Stiles role and Bobby Charlton plays as himself.

    GK Gordon Banks
    RB: Gary Neville
    LB: Ashley Cole
    CB: Terry Butcher
    CB: Bobby Moore
    DM: Bryan Robson
    LM: Paul Gascoigne
    AM: Bobby Charlton
    RM: Paul Scholes
    CF: Gary Lineker
    CF: Michael Owen

    Manager: Glenn Hoddle

    Subs:
    David Seaman
    Alan Ball
    Frank Lampard
    Alan Shearer
    Jimmy Greaves

I'm with Bo, that seems great to me although I'd swap Shearer for Lineker. I agree on Hoddle, every time he's on the BT Sport commentating I wish he was still the manager, he knows his onions.

Don't think Bobby Moore was overlooked, think he died way too young but would have got his knighthood if he had lived... Charlton and Hurst received their knighthoods after Moore died...But I take your point about performance over a period, but I would still have GH in my team...

Oooh I like this! I've gone with players I've seen for England and not a historical XI

    Manager - Bobby Robson

    Formation
    4-1-3-2

    GK - Shilton
    RB - Neville
    LB - Pearce
    CB - Butcher
    CB - Walker
    DM - Robson
    CM - Gascoigne
    CM - Gerrard
    CM - Scholes
    ST - Lineker
    ST - Shearer

Subs - Seaman, Ferdinand, A.Cole, Lampard, Platt, Collymore.

I know the Collymore choice is odd - I just always rated him as a player until his Liverpool move. I genuinely think he had the potential to be THE greatest striker England have ever had.

Thanks for reminding me of Jimmy Greaves, I'd have him in like a shot and instead of Michael Owen. Cruelly robbed of a place in the final - 44 goals in 57 for England. Might also on reflection prefer Terry Venables for Manager.

No. It's quite uplifting to think of the England players we enjoyed watching. It quite depressing to think of the players the Rest of the World could offer, Puskas, Di Stefano, Pele, Maradonna, Cryuff, here you are, eat your heart out:
