Raking over past is proven to waste valuable energy and kill brain cells increasing chances of developing altzheimers disease. This theory explains why sufferers have a high recall of things that happened years ago but can't renember what happened that morning. Learn by the past but don't be consumed by it. It will chew you up and spit you out.

It depends on the impact the past has had on your life Steve. Remembering things and striving to do better makes you a stronger and better person. Burying your head in the sand, living in denial or whatever then progression in life seldom occurs. As you say it's about learning from past events.
