Glasgow School of Art burns down

Not football but I posted four years ago half the iconic Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed building was lost when a students project for their Show caught fire. It was due to be reopened next year after a massive r3toration project.

Last night the entire building has burned down, taking adjacent buildings with it including the O2 Academy.
The students show started June 1 - could history be repeating itself?

I suspect the building may be too far gone this time and a total rebuild needed which may be unaffordable.

He designed all the interiors fittings and furniture. One of his chairs can be worth £1m.

Such a shame, I wonder what caused the fire.

I doubt they will ever know given the extent of the damage and the fact it started late evening when it was empty. The walls are still there but not much else. Some of the restored bits have not been put in it so that’s some small consolation. I thought they were putting sprinklers in after the last fire!!
Restoring half of it was costing £35m.

It certainly is a mess and will possibly be the end of it with the way that the building looks today.

Yes the question now is do they build a replica interior as nothing would have survived that.

I suppose it’s like the Tsars palaces in St Petersburg as the Nazis burned the originals down. Both Peterhof and Catherine’s Palace were rebuilt and now attract millions.

If it was in London, the rebuild would already have started.
