    Var

Doesn't seem to be working too well so far does it?

Three pen shouts last night, one questionable (theirs) two nailed on (ours), I can sort of forgive the ref for having his eyes elsewhere but what about those watching from the VAR room?

Maybe video review isn't the right thing for football, it works brilliantly in cricket, appears to have taken all the brattish behaviour out of tennis (ok some), is just accepted as part of the sport in NFL and video replay usually produces understandable decisions in F1, but all sports are different. The nature of cricket tennis and NFL are stop-start anyway so delay of play fits in OK there, and in F1 penalties can be applied retrospectively.

Its here to stay, but note that the other big ball game above, NFL, took three decades to get it 'right'

Understand where you are coming from Andy. My take?

If Walker had had his arms spread out like a crucifix as per that huge statue up Newcastle way he would have got away with it. The left arm went 40 to 50 degrees backwards of perpendicular and then it's a question of did he hit the lad or did the lad run into it?

Naive mistake that should surprise noone when you consider it's a full back playing a centre half's role. He should have been ball side and goal side of the Tunisian and facing the ball. Had he done that he could not have committed the foul nor could the Tunisian have taken advantage of the situation.

We will never get an explanation as to why Kane didn't get 2 penalties last night or why the very poor ref didn't book some Tunisians for the penalty box wrestling at free kicks and corners or why he allowed them to stand inches from the ball at free kicks.

It seems the "lesser" teams have worked out how to reduce the amount of actual playing time to a minimum to reduce the chance of the "better" teams scoring.

Last night's ref was abysmal. The VAR team idem ditto.

Up to the Brazil game I thought the officials, all of them had done well. Even if I disagreed with the ref or the VAR team, I could see why decisions were given. A difference of interprtation of the Law and/or what you saw. In the Brazil game the Swiss goal should have been chalked off and Brazil should have had a penalty. VAR said no.

Last night the ref immediately gave Tunisia a penalty. It wouldn't be given in the English Leagues but I could see how it might be given. Then you have the two penalty incidents involving Harry Kane. It is my honest opinion that the moves involved deserved to have Kent Walton commentating..............

We will never get an explanation as to why they weren't given but the gents in the VAR room should be sent home on the next available transport.

Maybe it was Jake Buxton in the VAR room

Do you think Var would have noticed the incident had it been Russia or Brazil? Makes one wonder!

Good post MA...not sure about Kent Walton though...that first one was more of a rugby tackle, expected to hear Bill McClaren commentating and ironically, an off the ball ‘tackle’ like that to deny a goal/point scoring opportunity would have been a guaranteed ten minute ‘sin bin’ in rugby.
Had sin binning been an option Tunisia would have either had to change their ‘tactics’ or face playing much of the match with nine players last night.

Indeed they would................... provided the ref and/or VAR deigned to give the punishment out in the first place which I very much doubt.

Perhaps one of the problems is the stop-start nature of other games. Obviously the case in cricket and tennis...and in rugby too where the referee is able to ask for specific advice regarding infringements or the correct grounding of the ball etc but possibly harder in football.
If VAR had been used last night for the Tunisian penalty there probably wasn’t enough evidence to overrule the referee imo but with regard to the ‘rugby tackle’ on Kane it was maybe up to the video officials to tell the ref to stop the game and have a second look.
Not sure how it all works and it may sound clumsy and an interruption to the flow of the game, but in relation to last night or our manager’s now infamous disallowed goal, at least the right decisions should have been reached.
You also have to wonder if Maradona would be quite such an Argentine hero or even if we’d ever have actually won the World Cup had VAR and goal line technology been available in those far off days.

Only the ref can allow injured players to re-enter the field...... Niang was let back on by the 4th official.

Senegal's 2nd should have been disallowed.
