    Dr Jane Barton

For a 12-year period, Dr Jane Barton was responsible for the culture which prevailed on the wards in Gosport Hospital where hundreds of patients died after being given doses of morphine and diamorphine 'without medical justification'.
Nobody has ever been prosecuted over the scandal and Dr Barton was allowed to continue practicing as a doctor until she retired.
The DPP judged there was not enough evidence to warrant prosecution in 2002. Barton issued 800 death certificates over the 12 years.
This could be bigger than Shipman and involves nurses who gave the prescribed doses and pharmacists who supplied them.

Unbelievable that this was allowed to happen.

And shameful that it has taken so long to highlight it.

A massive cover up by the NHS and useless work from the police.

During the coalition years Lib Dem Norman Lamb was urging for there to be an investigation. The Tories decided to announce that there wouldn't be one whilst he was on holiday. He pushed for the investigation which finally got going in 2014.

Now there will be even more procedures and it will be years (if ever) before anyone gets charged for this.

Apparently there was a report about this issue made in 2003...but it was not released until 2013. What on earth were our politicians doing in this ten years?

Waging war, false claims for expenses, covering their own backs in case something had been missed, in fact, all the normal things which politicians seem to do most of the time.
My daughter-in-law lived in Gosport in the early part of the millennium and she told me then that there were a lot of strange things happening at that hospital and not just relevant to the deaths. She texted me today and said "What did I tell you?"

The GMC don’t come out of it with much glory either. They didn’t even strike her off!

Totally agree. Her brother was a GMC member.
The report delay was supposedly down to ongoing inquests - how can they take 10 years. Several inquests were criticised too.
So much for listening to patients post Bristol Royal and Shipman. Why did the NHS not act in 2002 - that was Blair time!

Not playing politics with this one OC, this is a total national disgrace and jail time must be imparted on all of the offending parties.

The heart breaking testimonies of bereaved families should be a major wake up call. Drug administering protocols need tightening on a national level and Coroner's reports should not take more than a month to be released to the CPS.
