Surely it's not worthy of a penalty kick though. You'd rather be sent off than concede a goal, somebody could seriously injure another player and his team suffers less than somebody accidentally getting their arm in the way of a tame effort at goal that most likely wouldn't have gone in. We've just seen one of the best goals of the tournament wiped out by *that*. It's a complete and utter farce.

You would then be leaving it to the discretion of the officials and this is what VAR is there for, to help them. It's by no means perfect, as we saw on Monday, with Harry Kane being wrestled to the ground twice but the final decision is down to the ref. In this case, after reviewing the VAR screen, he decided it was a penalty.

For what it's worth, I don't think it was a definite penalty either, a bit harsh, I thought. But what's a referee's options? It's either a penalty or not.

VAR is proving too contentious and FIFA are saying its working. Utter tripe. We have seen blatant penalties not given either on field or via VAR, and 50/50 decisions over turned. Where is the ‘clear and obvious error’?

And those who suggest you use your arms ( like players have done since I began playing and watching football) to gain leverage are naïve and irrelevant ?

Yet again VAR has been used to try to sort out what is obviously from this thread,a matter of opinion, & that isn't what it was introduced for!! clear & obvious errors or blatant cheating yes but "is it int it" should be left to the refs, as soon as a ref is asked to review his decision on screen he is under massive pressure to change his mind.

The question is, has it has so often been, why can't they (refs) see what everyone else sees!

Not sure if the ref was told to review the incident at the cash-point or if it was his own choice, but he seemed to wave it away initially as if he was quite certain that it was no pen. If he was told to review it, then he's under huge pressure to award it. You're very much going to doubt your own judgement in that situation.

Refs being refs, and that's what they are in the VAR booth, love being part of the game and making decisions that effect the outcome. You can almost feel them itching to have an impact on the game from 500 miles away.

To be fair, I drew Denmark in the Rugby Club sweepstake so I think it's a fair decision as I pick up lolly if the Danes make it to the semis. By the way, Navy, it is incorrect to talk about an amount of penalties because penalties are finite and singular. You can have an amount of horse manure or even bull**** but it's a number of penalties.
