I really don’t like it and what’s worse FIFA think it’s a success. It’s there to correct any massive cock ups. The Spain equaliser being a point in case, ruled out for offside, but was found to be onside.
The referee got both penalty decisions correct on first viewing, Ronaldo lost control of the ball and went looking for a foul, some might say he got it. The other one, well, that was absolutely shambolic.
There have obviously been some really good decisions based on VAR, but also some piss poor ones.
The number of penalties has broken the World Cup record and we still have a long long way to go.
FIFA will point to the number of goals scored as its basis of a successful tournament. But how many have been VAR assisted?
    1. Refs have been awful, it's exposed their ineptitude and lack of understanding of the game, to an alarming degree.

    2. Players are cheats, some of the pens have been down to the refs taking action on grappling in the box, some have been wrong and it's clear that none of them understand the hand ball rule.

Lets hope that all this grabbing and holding stops, in every scenario, the uncontrollable variable is the ref.

Lets also hope that action gets taken retrospectively against cheats, this is not the game I've loved all my life.

Pretty sure not one player has been booked for simulation or diving in this world cup yet there's been plenty of penalty appeals turned down. VAR appears to be massively biased towards the attacking team. The interpretation of deliberate handball defies all logic.

This tournament is being ruined by player conduct, weak refereeing and VAR which has made more headlines than any player or team. The level of unpunished cheating is ridiculous. If a player goes down, rolls around in apparent agony, gets the game stopped and then springs up again he should be booked for feigning injury. If a player gets in the face of a referee he should be booked. Football thrives on its continuity – 10 minutes of VAR activity ruins a match – I would rather get the best referees, abandon VAR and get on with it.

And not one English referee amongst them.

Not saying English/European refs are the best but they do see these top players more than someone from say Korea or Senegal

Didn't Neymar get booked for that ridiculous 'falling over backwards as if felled by a firing squad' routine he did?

Really bad day for VAR yesterday. Let down by the refs in the VAR booth who have no excuse for getting it wrong and refs on the pitch unwilling to overrule them. The worst was the penalty for Saudi yesterday, followed closely by the Iran penalty. Also, the time taken for the system in Portugal-Iran was unacceptable too.

Real pity, FIFA couldn't train them up or guarantee that the review teams will be more consistent, accurate and timely. Gotta to be worried that this could mar the rest of the tournament if yesterday's standards become the norm

Just seen another utterly bizarre decision in the Belgium v Brazil game. The tackle by Kompany was as clear a foul as you could wish to see. The Brazilian's first touch wasn't good, but Kompany takes his legs with the ball nowhere in sight. VAR is an abject failure, not through what it shows, but by the way the complete tw@ts responsible are interpreting some pretty straightforward decisions.

Technical hyppotheticalQ then, if the player with the ball, loses control and the ball crosses the deadball line and then a tackle comes in after that, is the ball dead or can a pen still be given?

Does the ball have to be live to give a pen?

I ask as the commentators stated that the pen may not have been given as the Brazilian had lost control.

Law 12 states: Direct and indirect free kicks and penalty kicks can only be awarded for offences committed when the ball is in play.

Kane wasn't in control of the ball when he was wrestled to the ground, but the ball was in play.
