I think the clear out due to high wages is the likely reason.

That said if we can get Sam Johnstone from Man U as a 25 year old replacement at a similar cost, or even slightly higher, then I personally think it is good business all round. We need to reduce the age profile and get some hungry players who want to prove themselves.
