Thread: Fullbacks

I would have thought this was the perfect game to trial a counter attacking style of play. We were always expecting to have little possession but Nolan has yet to do any work on this, hopefully he will have it sorted for next week vs Leicester.

Hopefully in many a game we will have a 1-0 lead and be under pressure so this kind of style will be invaluable for the coming season. Well fingers crossed anyway.

Hopefully if we are 1-0 up we will push on and score 2 or 3 rather than sit back and wait for the inevitable to happen like last season. I think we will be set up differently this season with the signings we have made and despite yesterday I am excited for the real action to begin.

I'm suprised we've got the same back 4 as last season, improved in midfield and forwards, and forgot defence cover

Several past Notts managers have gone into the season with only one recognised right-back and left-back, thinking that centre-halves or midfielders could cover in the event of injury. Every time, that has proven to be a miscalculation, as far back as the days Gary Brazil used to shoehorn Nick Fenton into the right-back slot.

Managers do seem to regard full-backs as something of an afterthought, and yet when you think about it, the role requires one of the widest range of skills of any position. You need good defensive and attacking instincts, a fair bit of pace, crossing and passing skills, the ability to beat a man if necessary, the ability to be a secondary man marker, and tremendous energy. A good squad requires four players who specialise in this role.

    Playing devils advocate...

Didn’t we have the 3rd best defence in the league last season?

Have to agree with you on Jones, too often he looks like an accident waiting to happen. His big problem is his positional play, he regularly gives his winger yards of space and time to run at him. Jones has some good qualities, but for me he is the weak link at the back.

I believe you are right about Jones. But why they play Ty Kennedy Williams at left back is a waste of the lads talent. He is a fantastic attacking midfielder with good energy and sweet left foot.
