    before this thread I had not read a word about the mining strike.

    but i have just read wikipidea.

    i never knew the strike was illigal due to no national ballot.

    There might be an element of truth in that the Wilson government shut pits once the coal seams had been exhausted. Which is different to saying that pits were closed under Wilson whilst there was still coal to dig.

    Low lying fruit principle.

    Dig the coal that’s easy and economical to get to, leave the poor grade, hard to dig, expensive stuff.

    Environmentalists closed more coal mines than any government ever did.
