Both Alloa and Arbroath played four pre season friendlies before the start of the League Cup fixtures.
United are 5 points behind Ross County in this tournament and 2 behind Alloa ( who have only played one game ) .
For United to have any chance of making the next round they need to win their next two games against Alloa and Elgin - but this will not guarantee them going into the draw for the next round.

This means we are guaranteed not to finish top of this group. We are then hoping for best 2nd placed team, with a maximum possible tally of 7 points.
Last season, the 4 teams who qualified as best 2nd place had 10 points, 10 points, 10 points and 9 points. The 4 that never qualified had 9 points, 8 points, 8 points and 7 points.
We are on course to match last seasons worst 2nd place side in the absolute best case.
In different terms we are on course to match Albion Rovers performance last season....

Really disappointing to think we are out of the League Cup in the first round of the preliminary stages.
Probably just as well we have Alloa at home as they were charging £17 entry for their home game against Arbroath - no wonder the attendance was only 300 .
So, 2 games into the new season and we are out of the Scottish league Cup after two games . Disappointing.
