Tony Green for me. Almost single handedly saved us from relegation in 72. Shame that injury cut his career tragically short. Supermac after that

Aye Tony Green was fantastic. £150,000 bargain even at the prices those days.

But for his tragic accident he could have been one of the greatest.

I met Tony on a train when joining a ship in Liverpool. He told me about his ligament problems,he said he could play one game but then would have to miss a month. These days he could have had treatment in the States as Shearer and others have done.
It's a shame that he could not have had the odd game as this was 1974 and he could have saved himself for the Cup Final.

Same with me Sherwood - Milburn, then White.

But I always loved Jimmy Scoular of course.
We used to call some poor lass at school "Jimmy Scoular legs".
    Christ, kids can be cruel!

As a 'keeper myself I have to include Ronnie Simpson.

Then, when I was old enough to go regularly, John Anderson.

I was at the game at Palace where he got his injury, stood in among Palace fans.
When they were carrying him off they started booing him and calling him Norvern Scum.
I just lost it. Went absolutely ballistic and told them what a bunch of f****** a***wipes they were to boo a great player being carried off.
Surprisingly I didn't get the wellying I expected.
Theuy went all quiet, then an old Palace guy told them all to show some respect and they all looked a bit sheepish.

A sad day but well done for standing up to them. In an other post I was asked why I hated palace and I could not find a reason, maybe deep down it was this

Platini, Maradona, Zico mainly because I had a poor childhoid, an incomplete panini sticker album with these names in it under world cup legends, 3 tv channels a betamax video, no sky or internet and so these names sounded kind of exotic and heroic.

George Best was probably my first real hero after having a kick around with him when I was a kid and he had just retired. He was visiting friends in my area and signed an autograph. What a kind gent he was.
