Could you imagine the brain of Vaughan, coupled with the youth/tackling/energy of Yates?
That would be a proper midfield. Folks have to look beyond rough and tumble defensive mind sets. You signed younger players in this window. They need to work harder I'm afraid.
Tricky, you have excelled yourself on this fred. Respect. Your comments are pertinent and sensible. If only you brought the same good sense to Brexit...

Vaughan did what he does. Sat in front of the back 4 and tried to link play. The problem is there was only Hewitt and the back 4 to pass to so we're back to McParland days of pretty passing around the back, go nowhere, hoof up front, lose ball.

The question for me is whether when he's fitter and against hopefully lesser opposition he can control the play in their half rather than just our own. I'm not convinced, especially given we have 2 immobile centre halves who need some shielding from players running at them. We tried playing without Hewitt on a few occasions last season and got overrun. Now maybe Patching or Crawford are alternatives who knows. But Husin certainly isn't.

We look to really lack a target man who can hold the ball in the final third. Is that meant to be Hemmings? It certainly isn't Dennis. Without either a target man or a different style of play I just don't see how we get the ball to our wingers in the final third.

I dont think our formation suited Vaughan or our full backs who never really got forward due to the wingers sitting deep, Play Vaughan has a holding player tuck the 2 players inside to help Hewitt and allow the full backs to use the space.

I think where the opposition do not match us in a 4-4-2 (Colchester looked like they were playing a 3-4-2-1) then one of the wide players will need tuck in at times to make a more of a 4-3-3 to stop us being overrun in midfield. I think Thomas could do that role fine but it will require Nolan to be more flexible in his approach.

Only one game, but I thought how well their no 8, Harry Pell would have fitted into our midfield. He certainly brought the height, strength and mobility that was lacking from ours.

As others have said, I just can’t see a midfield two of Vaughan and Hewitt working on a long term basis. Hopefully Kellet can come in when he’s fit, but while he’s a good player, he’s not going to dominate a midfield in the required way at this level. Getting in a 6ft 5 inch league 2 Pogba before the window shuts would be ideal.

We will be regularly overrun in midfield if we play with just Vaughan and Hewitt in the centre. Maybe time to flex the formation, and definitely time to add Husin to the mix. Imho of course.

Don't think Husin would be much use to stop the midfield being overrun to be honest, we need a Bishop/Yates type player and I don't junk we have one
