Last season there were many who didn't give a toss about this tournament, until Csaba sent out the waifs and strays against Crusaders and we got gubbed. The meltdown that followed on from that belied the disregard leading up to the game.

    Just imagine the headline.

Dundee United (read first team irrespective who plays) nil - St Johnstone Babes - One! That's what the record books are interested in, not the compostion of the teams.

Couldn't care less, the result on Wednesday is meaningless, as long as we turn up against Thistle a week on Saturday that's all that matters

I hope we get beat eleven**** nil, anyone that buys a pie or bovril scalds their mouth, it pishes with rain, everyone going back to their car finds it's been broken into and also a tyre punctured and when they eventually get home, they find their missus getting chuckle brothered by two old firm fans.

Purely for validating this competition by attending.

If this is what you describe as Silverware there is something far wrong with your thinking.
The meltdown was not about losing to Crusaders it was all about ALL of the performances under Csaba,
Get real. It's a mickey mouse tournament as far as the first team are concerned.

The defeat to Crusaders was Csaba's first or second game as far as I recollect. He hadn't been found out at that time. It did send out a very strong indicator of things to come though.

Whilst the balance of opinion suggests it is indeed a Mickey Mouse tournament, Walt Disney think so, because it is sponsored by the producers of Scotland's 'other' national drink, not Hollywood.

On Wednesday at 7.45pm, United will take on St Johnstone colts in the first round of the Irn-Bru Cup. The game will see Craig Easton and his reserve squad given a chance to impress as well as provide some players on the fringe of the first-team action an opportunity to shine.
The likelihood is that the United team will consist of various players around the fringes of the first-team action with Scott Allardice amongst those who are expected to take part.

It is extremely heartening that Craig Easton is 'excited' about this game and wants to do well in 'this' cup.

Call it a chance for silverware, call it Micky mouse, call it what you like. But if the club and the fans a like are not going to take it seriously then why don't we just withdraw from the competition. Tomorrow will see probably less than 2000 fans, so policing the match, stewards, pies and programs will in the end cost the club money. Money we don't have or money that can be put to better use.
