Well, quite! Curtis travelled a similar path to Elliott Hewitt, originally a pretty ordinary full-back or wide midfielder (in Curtis' case), but a revelation when moved to the centre of the park. Thompson gave us energy and tenacity, and he wasn't as lacking in ability as some blinkered folk made out. He's exactly the sort of player we needed against Yeovil, but it's too bloody late now. We seem to love throwing out our home-grown talent and collecting other clubs' half-hearted cast offs.

As many were saying in the summer, it's not as if we've got a shortage of midfielders, or that the ones we've got aren't capable players, but we've got too many of the "nice" type and not enough defensively minded and/or box-to-box tackling machines.

I thought Nolan was preparing to have a another, more committed go at the three-man midfield tactics he employed unsuccessfully for a brief spell last Christmas, and that was the reason why he was bringing in more of this type, but to assemble this set of midfielders and then try to stick with 4-4-2 seems naïve at best.

He would be a good signing however, Sunderland just released him due to his 45k pw contract, so i doubt he would drop. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but i can't help but feel like we should have tried harder to keep O'Connor. O'Connor, Vaughan and Hewitt/Crawford would make a solid 3 imo. Yes he signed for Lincoln, which people will look at and say well it's the club closer to home, but judging by his tweets it was more the fact Notts wanted him to take yet another pay cut being the main reason he left.

I never understood the flak Curtis took. The lad never stopped trying and wasn't a bad player by any standards.

Shaun Derry, almost by accident, found Thompson's best position in central midfield, but subsequent managers obviously didn't do their homework and started messing him around again, putting him at full-back or out wide where he didn't shine. He was a key contributor to us staying up in the 'Great Escape' season under Derry, doing enough work for two men in the middle of the park, especially following the injury to Gary Liddle. He's exactly the sort of player Nolan needed if he wanted to continue playing 4-4-2, and letting him go is already looking like a significant blunder. The same could be said of Milsom to some extent.
