    Nolan's final stats

League games only (not including play offs)
    P 72 W 31 D 19 L 22 Pts 112

Average points per game - 1.56

Leaves us two places lower than where we were when he was appointed.

His 8-1 loss at Swansea was one goal short of the all time record defeat (9-1 last suffered in 1927) and the biggest loss margin since losing 7-0 at Bury in 1960.

People looking from outside the Notts County environment would conclude that this was a very respectable record and that this is a very harsh decision, and it's a perfectly reasonable argument.

However, Alan Hardy has obviously taken the same view as many of Nolan's critics on this message board, that the recent direction of travel has been downwards, and the acceleration in that decline this season has been the tipping point.

I got the impression Hardy liked Nolan and wanted him to succeed, otherwise he wouldn't have backed him to make big signings in the summer. So this decision will not have been taken without a lot of thought and soul searching.

Should also add that this is the earliest point in a season that Notts have ever sacked anyone. Mick Walker the previous earliest after 7 games. Eric Houghton resigned after 4 games in 1953 to go to Aston Villa.

Mick Walker is often quoted as a case of harsh dismissal, based on previous results, but I never agreed with that assessment. I went to a pre-season friendly at Armitage FC (which doesn't even exist now) and saw a squad and management who looked far too laid back for my liking. It didn't surprise me to see a rather unfit-looking team lose at Portsmouth on the opening day and continue to perform badly thereafter. Poor preparation leads to bad performance, and that whole season was an example of it. We ended up finishing last in what is now the Championship, and we've never been back since.

UTM - As our resident Statto, is it possible to break Nolo's 72 games into 4 parts ie first 18 games, 2nd 18, 3rd 18 and last 18?

IMO, this will fully illustrate why AH has wielded the ax....the stat of 1.56 doesn't really tell the full story of what was a great start to Nolo's career and a rapid decline.......sorry to be a pain

Calm down Squid....shouldn't you be working on your thesis about the Nolo sacking being in some way down to the Trews?

Third quarter still isn't so bad, but a terrible final 18.

An overall 1.56 average gives you 72 points over 46 games, you might get into the play-offs with that, you might not, but he failed to make it through when we did. We've got to be looking at somebody who can get us automatic at this level, this is League Two we're talking about.

Being honest, I wouldn't say the final 18 is "terrible". It's just bottom third of the table form, compared the previous three quarters of play-off form. Harry Kewell's current total record is very similar to Nolan's last quarter!
