Thread: King Alfred

    King Alfred

Famous for the incident with the cakes but does anyone know if he actually ever wrote anything?

Well he was considered “learned” in his time, visited the Pope as a child (so presumably had latin), encouraged education among his subjects (allegedly) and signed an agreement with the Danes. So yes, one assumes he could write!
Whether anything he wrote survives - I have no idea!
Hope this helps. (But I doubt if it will).

Yes, so talking of keeping the site ticking over Rod I have the reply from my friend who is a learned history professor. He says that Alfred gathered scholars at his court to help translate classical works into old English. Now in the prefaces Alfred claims he translated them but did he or did the scholars do them?

Ronnie you correctly state that Alfred visited the pope when he was young because originally he was set for the religious life but his brothers died and he became King. Some say that he was accompanied by St Swithun on this trip.

Apparently there are voluminous books and papers presenting arguments as to whether Alfred did or didn’t translate the books. My own thought is how ever did he find the time?
