I cannot see the point of a 'People's Vote'. For a start I can guarantee that most people who want one haven't a clue just what they'd be voting on. Most of those I read about demanding one seem to think they'd be voting on whether to accept the terms of a trade deal. They won't, the only thing that will be decided before the end of March when we leave, is the Withdrawal Agreement. Any trade deal will be negotiated later, during the transition period.

There is also not enough time now before we leave to set up a second in or out referendum, so we won't be voting on that either. And whether we have another vote or not, whatever we vote on, whatever we may or may not decide, as M. Barnier keeps pointing out, the clock is ticking, and EU law says on March 29th, we're out.

I absolutely phucking hate it when I agree with you sinkov . The Labour Party are already ripping themselves to bits on getting the wording right.

This is way beyond a tragicomedy, it's pathetic!

The American Committee on United Europe (ACUE), founded in 1948, was an American organization that sought to counter the communist threat in Europe by promoting European political integration. Its first chairman was ex-wartime OSS head William Joseph Donovan. The vice-chairman was Allen Dulles. A board member was Walter Bedell Smith.

The structure of the organisation was outlined in early summer of 1948 by Donovan and Allen Welsh Dulles by then also reviewing the organization of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in response to assistance requests by Richard von Coudenhove-Kalergi and Winston Churchill.

Declassified American government documents have shown that the ACUE was an important early funder of both the European Movement and the European Youth Campaign. The ACUE itself received funding from the Rockefeller and Ford foundations.

The US policy was to promote a United States of Europe, and to that end, the committee was used as a discreet way to funnel CIA funds (by the mid-1950s, ACUE was receiving roughly US$1,000,000 per year) to organizations supporting European federalism such as the Council of Europe, the European Coal and Steel Community, and the proposed European Defence Community

interestingly engineered....imagine - if the true goal, the strategy - was destabalization, to erode state sovereignty....and what if the UK's (fringe) membership was only required to make participation seem more attractive to others - now, job done....they're all locked in, and contained - by unelected mandarins and unseen puppetmasters.

And we'd remain locked in by unelected mandarins and unseen puppet masters norder, if it was anything to do with Obama. The Donald however, perceptive as ever, has seen the EU scam for what it is, and is advising us to get the feck out as quickly as possible, while we still can.

Obama sticking his nose in, meddling in our affairs - sinkov... well, that seemingly, only helped reinforce the feeling against E.U membership - but then his wording, looking behind what was an obvious spin on them, contained another, more interesting angle...imo.

As citizens of the United Kingdom take stock of their relationship with the EU, you should be proud that the EU has helped spread British values and practices – democracy, the rule of law, open markets – across the continent and to its periphery. The European Union doesn’t moderate British influence – it magnifies it.

A strong Europe is not a threat to Britain’s global leadership; it enhances Britain’s global leadership. The United States sees how your powerful voice in Europe ensures that Europe takes a strong stance in the world, and keeps the EU open, outward looking, and closely linked to its allies on the other side of the Atlantic. So the US and the world need your outsized influence to continue – including within Europe.

And in today’s world, even as we all cherish our sovereignty,
...the nations who wield their influence most effectively are the nations that do it through the collective action that today’s challenges demand.
