    Club Statement

Due to a medical emergency, the match has been postponed.

Barnsley Football Club would like to thank the swift response from the Yorkshire Ambulance service and the medical staff of both Burton Albion and the Reds.

Steve Bailey, Safety Officer at Barnsley Football Club would like to send a message thanking both sets of supporters who behaved impeccably whilst the incident was ongoing.

Bailey said: “It became apparent very quickly that the incident was of a serious nature. This required a quick response from all medical staff inside Oakwell at the time. We don’t want to comment on the incident until we have further details.

“What we do want to say is that everyone connected to both clubs have acted in an impeccable manner, showing the community spirit and togetherness that was required, as well as showing understanding as to why the game was postponed. Football does not matter in a situation like this, we all send our best wishes to the gentleman and his family.”

Chief Executive Gauthier Ganaye said: "All of the medical staff inside of Oakwell along with Steve [Bailey] and his team responded superbly to a serious incident. All of us remain concerned and send our best wishes to the gentleman involved, along with his family.

"We would like to especially thank the fast response of Yorkshire Ambulance and their staff. The importance of knowing important medical technique has been seen today and we will continue to raise awareness on this topic."

The Club has no further update on the condition of the gentleman involved but will look to update all supporters when appropriate to do so.

All match and car park tickets will be valid for the re-arranged fixture. Alternatively, full refunds will be available from the Barnsley FC Box Office from Monday 24th September on production of a valid match ticket.

Long-serving Barnsley Football Club volunteer Stephen Croft was airlifted to Sheffield Northern General today, after suffering a cardiac arrest just prior to kick-off against Burton Albion.

A popular member of the match day staff at the club, Stephen is exceptionally well thought of and today’s news has devastated the staff, as well as the community of Barnsley.

We would like to place on record our sincerest thanks to everyone connected to Burton Albion FC for their help and swift action in assisting Stephen during the incident.

Stephen’s family have sent the following statement:

The family of Stephen Croft would like to sincerely thank the Burton players and both clubs officials for their rapid response to Stephen’s collapse just before today’s game. He is now stable but in a poorly condition in Hospital, at Sheffield Northern General. Without their rapid response, he would not be here now.

The family would like to thank both sets of fans for their dignity and understanding. This sort of incident brings out the best in people and that can be seen today in the stands and on the pitch at Oakwell. They are a credit to both teams.

The family are humbled by the messages of support already received.

It goes without saying we can all be proud of our ambulance services including the air ambulance, who we all couldn’t thank enough.

Stephen remains in a serious condition. Barnsley Football Club will update supporters when appropriate.

Barnsley Football Club have been sent the following statement from the family of Stephen Croft.

After the 61-year-old was airlifted from Oakwell to hospital on Saturday afternoon, he has remained in hospital. The family have now confirmed that Stephen’s condition has improved, thus allowing him to communicate with his family and friends.

    Statement

The family of Stephen Croft are pleased to be able to let you know that following our last update on Saturday evening, Stephen is now awake in hospital and able to talk to us. He is still poorly and there is clearly a long road to recovery ahead, but all the signs are positive. The improvement in his condition since Saturday evening has been remarkable and we would like to extend our thanks to the wonderful staff on the GICU at the Northern General.

We would also like to reiterate our thanks to the Burton players, staff and fans, the medical staff from Barnsley and Burton, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the continued support of Barnsley Football Club and their fans.

We are truly humbled by the messages of support and well wishes we have all received over the last few days. Finally, we would ask you to respect Stephen and the family's privacy through this difficult time and we will provide further updates via the team at Barnsley Football Club when appropriate.
