Millmoor, then the home ground of Rotherham United F.C., was the first sporting venue where Pukka Pies were sold. Rotherham United's supporters hold the record for the most pies consumed at a football match, with a consumption 40% above the Football League average.[5]

That was lifted from wiki but i believe it is true and the insinuation that we are fat bar stewards up here!
Lol. Only reason I used ti go to Millmoor.

Funnily enough I met a former business partner of Tony Stewart in the Brooklands Hotel (said to be the home of the Barnsley Chop). This was just after TS took over at RUFC. Hed had a few and was very loose with his opinions.

An old article about the pie eating claim:

    https://www.theguardian.com/football...al-of-football

As someone who now lives a fair distance from Rotherham, I have to say that the average size of people in the town appears strikingly large when I travel back...

Not sure of the date of this article but it looks as though we may be quite fat up here.

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/health-f...-area-compare/

BUT could this be the cause...

So lets try to reduce poverty in Rotherham and we might get people with improved lifestyles. Good idea eh? Or are Rotherham people just naturally inclined to being fat? Something in the south yorks air perhaps...

I am aware of the association between poverty and obesity.

As a personal observation, every few weeks, I like to treat myself to a takeaway (Indian, Chinese, Fish and Chips - whatever). Not the cheapest way to eat by any means and generally not the healthiest. When waiting, I've always been struck by the fact that the majority of people who get their food from those outlets are (from appearance and conversation) not well off.

I've often tried to square the takeaway circle and can't. I note that your article also shies away from explaining the link between obesity and relative poverty. Do you have an explanation?

As you believe that reducing relative poverty would reduce obesity, you must believe in a causal link as opposed to the other possibility - that both are caused by another factor. What are you saying is the link?

I'm all for reducing poverty everywhere, by the way. That's one of the reasons I reject Labour's job destroying policies.

Sorry Kerr genuinely lost me on the causal link bit. Give me an eg.

You said that poverty could be the cause of obesity (and I do acknowledge that you limited it to 'could').

I'm curious as to how you think that works. I've stood in takeaway queues for many years and struggled to understand why people who, on the face of it, probably have less money than me, would spend it on what is generally costly and fattening food. If you can explain that I would be very interested.

    Ok thanks for that.

Could be a lot of things: stress, lack of time, tiredness, can't afford good food, low self esteem/ depression, mental health problems. These are a few things that come to mind.

Also found these which sort of sum it up:

I think the principle is the same as why the poorest sections of " poor" nations produce more children into poverty
