I always associate the Vennel with Peters (Wranglers and Levi's) and Fusco's (Hot Vimto and their mynah bird). Great to see them again!

Where the Vennel crosses Irish Street near the Dougie Arms pub was for many years Cliff Hamilton's
Shoe Shop which featured a mark on the wall where one of the biggest Nith floods reached.

Are you sure about the flood level being at Hamiltons shoe shop? That would suggest that the Vaults and the other shops at the bottom of the vennel would be about twenty feet under water.... highly unlikely as the water would be more or less over the Devorgilla bridge for that to happen.

It seems unlikely that the floods ever reached as high as that. If you look at where Hamiltons shop was and picture the water from the alleged high mark it would suggest that the Vaults and the rest of the bottom of the Vennel would be under about twenty feet of water given the gradient of the Vennel.

Looking at the original picture again, maybe twenty feet is a bit much, but when you consider that the shop was opposite fuscos(just above where the youngers beer sign is in the picture) if you invisage standing where the picture has been taken and say that the water was at the wheels of the car standing on its own, that suggests about maybe twelve feet of water from where the pic has been taken from. Still hard to believe.

Well George I have just this morning spoken to a former employee of Pearsons and the lady confirmed one
particulsrly huge flood many years did, in fact, come up as far as the Vennel / Irish Street crossroads. You can
of course ask any auld worthies you may know if they remember the flood mark originally referred to.
