A great read from a local player from a great era when rivalry wasn't king

I did not realise he was a local kid. I remember him playing for Derby and flying down the wing banging crosses over and taking free kicks. It seems we have him to blame for coloured boots. Can't bloody stand em. All football boots would be black if I had my way.

I was brought up with brown boots with nailed in leather studs. None of these carpet slippers they play in these days.

Yep. My first pair were hand me downs from my brother. Brown boots over the ankles and nailed in studs. Anyone got the dubbin?

I still use Dubbin on my walking boots and golf shoes. Can't beat it.

Ditto. I must have been very young when I got my first boots discarded by my brother. I just recall them being a bit big and incredibly heavy. Although they were now mine they were just not needed to kick a Frido around. A bit later I got my first own new boots which met the necessary requirements of my dad, namely a rock hard toe and adequate protection for the ankles. He had no time for the low cut, soft toed Italian boots my brother now wore.
