You wouldn't want to go down a mine in case you got your hands dirty. Pathetic!

Coal (and steel) industries declined in France, Belgium, Germany, USA as well, for the same reasons.
The Ruhr:
https://www.metropoleruhr.de/en/land...el-sector.htmlThe first cause of the fall of regional coal mining was the high price of the Ruhr coal due to its deep deposition and the costly methods to mine it.
Secondly, as the international trade became liberalized in the second half of the 20th century remarkably cheaper imports of coal became possible. Despite long sea passages, innovations in the waterborn traffic (diesel engines, large scale units) made imported coal cheaper than the coal from the Ruhr.
Finally, on the energy market coal was increasingly substituted by oil and gas. The coal from the Ruhr was no longer the dominant source of energy and had to undergo a radical devaluation.
Both my Grandads worked in the pit and they both hated Thatcher, however, they hated the pits more and both agreed that they should be shut down.
They must be turning in their graves at your avatar gm.
