Andreas Winkler says Barnsley are raring to put Saturday’s defeat at Charlton Athletic behind them when they travel to Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday.
The Reds suffered just their second loss of the Sky Bet League One campaign courtesy of a Karlan Grant double at the Valley, but the Reds’ Assistant Head Coach says the players have got their sights set on three points at Montgomery Waters Meadow.
“When we trained on Sunday, the players were saying ‘let’s go on Tuesday’ – they’re a young squad with a very good attitude and they will want to show their best against Shrewsbury,” said Winkler.
“At the beginning of the match against Charlton, they had a high level of self-confidence. But maybe this was the problem, maybe we played too many square balls to show the opponent how good we are? The players are aware of their quality and they will all go out there and put in their best performance.”
Shrewsbury currently lie 18th in the table, just one point above the bottom four after 14 games of the season and have won just twice in the league so far.
With three goals to his name, Lee Angol is leading the Shrews’ scoring charts but the forward hasn’t found the net since a 2-2 draw with Gillingham on 29 September.
However, despite John Askey’s side’s profligacy in front of goal, Winker is anticipating a stern encounter in Shropshire on Tuesday evening.
“Shrewsbury are near the bottom of the league and they will fight for every metre, tackle hard and it will be a tough fight,” continued the Reds’ Assistant. “We have to bring our style of football to them and, if we do that, we will have a good chance to win.”
We are almost a third of the way through the campaign, and the league table is potentially starting to take shape.
History suggests that if the Reds continue at their current trajectory they will be there or thereabouts when the season reaches its climax in May, but Winkler insists his side are not focussing on this just yet.
“We’re not looking too much at the table right now,” said Winkler. “Until Christmas, we’ll just be looking to the next match and do our best style of football. Then, at Christmas, we’ll have a look at what we can achieve in the summer.”

Like the fact they had em' in sunday.
Dan the man does right to get the players in for training on Sunday obviously he thought they didn't give their all against Charlton that's servers them right good management they might learn
I think personally i could be wrong , that the players are in every sunday for recovery procedures , ice baths , stretches and massage
He may have said training but not necessarily how we are seeing it .
Agree. The mentality of many European countries isn't the same as ours. Sunday's host their main football programme whereas ours is setdy. Wagner at udders ezzem in on a neet for training when thuv gorra midweek game. Personally I think the management team were unhappy with Saturday but not so unhappy as to gerrem in training Sunday just on principle. Just my opinion
Aye it's totally diffrunt game nar , 2 pints int Eastdene or Dove, a pie n some black pudding , 2 slices ov Sunblest/mothers pride wi mucky dripping onnit , them players wud feyt a lion wimps narradays !!!!
