Frenchman makes a complete mess of his header and the ball hits the defender and goes out of play and referee correctly awards a corner.
He is then told he must review the decision, goes to have a look and is quite satisfied and starts to go back to oversee the corner. He is then called back again and probably reminded that we have a new toy, VAR, and he must change his decision if he wishes to continue refereeing at this level in the future. He goes back again, hardly glances at the incident and then gives a penalty.
    You couldn't make it up!!
Yes VAR will be the saviour of the game!

    .

....looking at the Vid - Sub....I think the ref would've called it wrong if he gave the corner....so in this instance, I think Var got it right - but then, there were other times when those doing reviewing on screen, got it wrong - and times when it looked like they should have intervened - but didn't....so doubt it'll stop the controversy.

norder, so what you are saying is that every handball in the penalty area should be a penalty. The distance between the attacker and defender is so short that the defender would not even have time to react. The attacker cocked up and benefitted from his own failings, it should not even have been reviewed because it could not be called a big error or whatever they call it.
I still believe that we should go with the onfield officials except for goal line technlogy which I think is excellent.
Anyway, it matters not, unless we are relegated. If we are I shall be going to the Turf for my 68th season, however, if we stay up it is the end for me. Having said that, I think that The Championship will bring in VAR in 2020/21 anyway ----if not before.

of course am not saying that....because I think - it was a deliberate handball - Perisic was still on the rise and about to peak - so his arm movement was unnatural - it dropped too quickly and he even seemed to open his hand toward the ball - and he's a pro...so will naturally react on that level - just as the french attacker - when the ball missed his head, he stiil tried to get a leg to it.... .
as for Var....as this proves - the controversy remains....but Worry not !

I read the opinion of two ex refs in the Sunday papers, one, I think it was Kaplan, said the decision was wrong, the other said it was a correct decision. I've read ex players who said the try should have stood, ex players who said they got it right. The point about this one is that the ref went against the protocols they had talked about just days before the game. World Rugby said decisions should not be called back except in cases of clear and obvious error, refs should not be subservient to the system, but make the decisions on field themselves whenever possible, but then Garces goes and hands over the decision to the TMO on what was a marginal call. Totally against the edicts of just a couple of days earlier. VAR is supposed to take the controversy out of the game, but even in Rugby it can cause more controversy than any on-field decisions do.

I look forward to VAR being introduced into the Northern League within the next year or so, after all, the decisions made in every game of football are important to those playing the game at every level.
I think that the Premier League and the Football Association should pay to equip every club in the land with the necessary equipment and the training to use it so that every club involved in league football from Under 10 level upwards will be able to get correct decisions. It will also help the young up and coming referees because it should stop the abuse they get from parents etc. on the line if they can refer to a screen.

It isn't going to happen at lower levels though because these matches are not considered as important, however, they all play by the same Laws of The Game which are applied by officials whose decision is final, unlike where VAR is used where the onfield officials' decisions are not final --as was seen in the World Cup Final and in the rugby on Saturday. However, these VAR decisions were correct, no matter what opinions the onfield officials had ---the proof is in the published results.

Reminds me of a tale my dad told me when I was a little lad Sub, Freddie Trueman made a very optimistic optimistic appeal for caught behind, and the umpire fell for it and put his finger up. This was in the days when most cricketers were still gentlemen, and the appalled batsman glared at Fred as he went past and said, 'That was never out Fred, I never touched it.' Fred just replied 'Look in the paper tomorrow morning son.'
