How did we end up like this?

Well since we last got promoted in the Munto season (09/10) it comes down to one thing for me and that is the clubs famous revolving door. It’s ingrained into the fabric of the club and has been the only consistency in the past 8 years to the point we’ve now hit rock bottom.

    In this decade we have been through;

    2 Chairman
11 managers (soon to be 12)
    211 players!!!!

This high turnover of staff simply has to stop before it costs us our league status. We must learn from this going forward. The club simply cannot carry on with this quantity over quality approach. The philosophy of the football club needs to change to one in which an identity is established as to the type of football team we want to be and the style we want to play and then go and get the type of player we want.

When you look at the list of 211 players it’s incredible that on average each season 26 new players have turned out for the club.

And we wonder why they look like a bunch of individuals. Because they never have enough time to become a team.

That’s a great post MM. I’ve been saying for a while now what we need is a blueprint for sustainability, not a five year plan for the Championship.

Our ship is powering towards the iceberg whilst taking on water at a phenomenal rate. We need a captain to steady the ship and unfortunately there currently isn’t one in sight, from the chairman, his board, his management team, his coaching staff or his players.

We need to have a massive clear out and make sure we bring in a manager we are prepared to give time to salvage this season, consolidate our league position next season and then build from there.

I do fear this next appointment could be last chance saloon for our great club.

If only we could identify with certainty how we have ended up in this situation. What is certain, is that Notts have no more right to escape non-league football than any other club. But how do we avoid it?
Actually it shouldn't be too difficult in theory, I reckon 28 games left to gather 34 points, 8 wins 10 draws and 10 defeats would do it.
The wins don't have to come now but the defeats definitely have to stop.
With a fan base as old as ours is, we tend to yearn for an "up and at 'em" approach, hence Turley's popularity with many fans, and in truth if we had 11 players giving everything they have for 90 minutes each week in this dire division then 34 points is eminently achievable.
Kewell was admonished for criticising the players, " he's lost the dressing room" is an often heard remark from ex-players.
Well F*** the players, if you can't be arsed to do the basics of your chosen profession, keep making the same mistakes and offer no fight then you should be criticised.
Mr Hardy needs to forget Ilkeston, kids football, Twitter, offers to rescue Skegness FC and any other irrelevant cause. His only focus should be to get his next appointment right.
It needs to be someone who is his own man with his own preferred way of playing that doesn't need to change week in week out, it has to be simple and capable of gaining us 34 points.
If Clough could turn a bag of S*** into two time European cup winners then surely someone can turn our bag of S*** into a modestly competent team and save us from humiliation.

One look at this super post reveals exactly where our problems lay: recruitment. Pure and simple. The amount of money that has been spent on wages for this absolute dross is outrageous. Look down that list of players, how many were a success?

Whoever has been responsible needs to hang their head in shame. Compare that list with Peterborough United over the last few years- (a club arguably smaller than Notts). Barry Fry would never have let this happen.

We have been a club run by amateurs for 20 years.

Completely agree with the OP, it would be interesting to compare these stats with Accrington Stanley on no money.

Reading that list, thanks MM for the effort, really shows how many millions we've wasted. Chronic mismanagement of resources going on for years.
Looking at some of those squads with hindsight now, how did we ever expect to do well? No wonder the managers get turned over on a six monthly basis, the standard overall of players recruited has been garbage.

I agree 100%. But this then asks the question if the manager is completely at fault, the coaching staff, the scouting, or do they all have equal amounts of blame attached to each one of them?
Looking at the squad now and the coaching staff, then a complete purge is needed and start afresh.

Maybe a couple of seasons in the Conference is what the club needs - clear out all the dead wood and non jobs, start again with a clean slate and with people who have some passion and drive.
Short term (?) pain for long term gain.
The club is on life support and despite Mr Hardy's significant backing and well meant actions, needs a complete overhaul.

I’ve come to the same conclusion as Scanlons Hat-trick.

Surely with a top 3 budget it cannot be that hard to put together a competitive squad, a blind donkey would have done better.

We all knew we had defensive frailties so what do we but bring in others from non league.

May Mr Hardys guilty of not interfering!
