Problem wi the winter break is that it maks it necessary to compensate via games at night in the months either side of the break. Noo .. cards on the table here, I am nae able tae attend many games ... very few actually, for a variety o' reasons, but ... in any cold month - of which there are too many - I would find it mair comfy in the Merkie at 3 o' clock any day than at 7.45pm! ... it's fυckin freezin! .. brutal!
I reckon it would be better if the games were schedjed as normal ... ie. 3pm, Setterday kick affs, and the SFA jist identified a clutch o' suitable weekdays on which matches, postponed due tae weather, could be rescheduled.
Ah mean ... FFS ... even in January, ye can hae a blizzard accompanied by sub zero temps and high winds on a Setterday, and see a calm mild day ahead on the Wednesday jist by checkin the BBC online weather forecast ... like on the same Setterday. OK, the weather forecast is nae aye wis perfectly accurate, but it's nae usually wildly aff the mark.
Surely one idea would be to maximise the amount of midweek games prior to December so that when we get to roughly this time of year we are 3-4 games ahead?
Looking at the fixtures we've played this year we've only had 2 midweek league games, Hamilton at home Wed 31st October and the Huns away Wed 5th December. Add in the League cup game against Hibs on Tue 25th September then that leaves many midweeks empty.
Granted there were international breaks some weeks but I'm sure a couple of midweeks between the start of the season and now could have been utilised to ease the build up coming into the festive period?
Especially at the start of the season when players are presumably at their fittest and squad concerns are at a low, coupled with the hunger to watch football as supporters have been deprived throughout the summer months.
If we'd gone further in the Europa League a lot of those free midweeks would have disappeared. Dont think we have the flexibility anymore to rearrange individual matches far less whole cards.
Granted but before the league had kicked off only two teams were still in Europe, the authorities could quite easily have adapted fixtures in an ongoing manner to accommodate the other 10 teams.
Even if it meant only 1-2 extra games had been played before this point it still would alleviate the congestion and the financial burden of the paying folk
Looking at the international calendar then it shows that Sept 3-11, Oct 8-16 and Nov 12-20 were their scheduled dates.
This leaves....
August - 7/8, 14/15, 21/22, 28/29
September - 18/19
October - 2/3, 24/25
November - 6/7, 27/28
By my reckoning that is 9 available free midweeks between the opening weekend kick offs til now.
