Preston North End Post Match Thoughts

Well "It's a funny old game". A team put together from whoever was available or could stand up, a short bench filled up with strange names and we grab the first win of 2019. OK, the year is only 9 hours old (17 for you) but it feels better already, especially as other results (and goals against) mostly went our way. Well done Millers. On to a Sunday day out in Manchester and some relaxation.

    Thoughts on today's game?

We've now got more points than our last debacle in the Championship - with 20 games to go! Speaks volumes for how hard Warne & Co have worked to turn things around. And today epitomised that. Down to bare bones, on the pitch and the bench, outplayed for majority of the first half, dire officials (again)... but we rolled up our sleeves and battled for 3 points. Hopefully, we can bring in quality reinforcements over the next weeks who can help convert the energy and effort into more wins and a move away from the strugglers!

I missed my first home league game in over 20 years today because my wife’s got the flu, so don’t really want to comment on a game I’ve not watched.
Anyway it all worked out brilliant for us today with us winning and the 3 closest to us all suffering demoralising defeats.

Our patched up squad and result reminds me of a game in the late 90’s. We tried to get our away game at Peterborough postponed because a flu bug decimated our squad, the league refused but we still won 5-0.

First half we weren't particularly on it. Preston got in behind 4 or 5 times far too easily. We lacked that bit of steel and structure in midfield. Brilliant free kick from Vaulks just what we needed going into half time. Warne was right to recognise our fragility and make the two changes at half time to make it harder for Preston to get in behind, which worked. We were more on the front foot and in control of the game. Brilliant cross by sub Newell and an intelligent header back across the keeper by Smith.

We're all thinking nailed on home win now. Just keep it calm Rotherham...

1 min later... 2-1. Preston back in it. Oh no, another draw on the cards.

15 minutes Heroic and battling defending later and we have our first win in what seems like an age! And boy did we need it! Happy New Year to all on millersmad. A great start to 2019!

Yep good win and a bonus Bolton and Reading got thrashed. Great goals and good subs by Warne at half time. Both Ford amd Newell played well with a great cross by Newelly for the second. If only he could do it over 90 mins but he can certainly do it over 45.

First half passing by us was woeful and Ajayi looked uncomfortable all game as a right back. First half we can thank Rodak for keeping us in the game. Good goal by Vaulkes but a bit hit and miss otherwise. Palmer far too weak. Wiles did some good things and is no worse than Manning.

Ref was feckin shocking. They wrestled Smithy all game with him having no protection at all but the ref was quick to give it against Smithy when he gave some back.

Why do we concede sloppy goals so soon after we score ie for their goal?

A good win though and a bit of daylight from the bottom 3.

Mr OBE needs to get his cheque book out now and get in the players we need to keep us up.

BUT utm! Thanks for a nice New Years day!

Totally agree it was a great display by the Millers. Both goals were excellent. Just wish we could be more composed at the back and not give the ball away so easily. Wouldnt be such a nervous watch in last 10 minutes. Guy on radio Sheffield complaining about the officials. Ref was a premier league ref so not sure why he gave out so many cards. Most not needed.

Lee probart should be struck off the refs list, he's the worst official I've seen all season. Gallagher kicked out at Smith when they were on the floor after he wrestled Smith to the floor and neither incident was punished. I hope the assesor gives him the write up he deserved!

The ref was horribly one sided, he was desperate for them to equalise. Time and time again he ignored Smith being assaulted by their double coverage only to give the foul to them......premier league you're having a laugh ! As for the game agree with all the above, we really could have been 3 down at HT , brilliant swerving shot from Vaulkes gave us a lead we didn't deserve, but credit Warnie for making a brave double sub and the change 2nd half was instant and we were on the front foot. Brilliant run and cross from Newell and a superb header from Smith who despite being pushed in the back managed a great header. That should have made it more comfortable, but cue the ref ignoring a clear foul against us , and immediately giving pne a dubious one that they scored from and then a horrible last 10 minutes when every decision went against us including a pne defender virtually catching the ball down in the NE corner right in front of the Lino who must have seen it ! 5 bookings for us , really ! Sorry for the rant, don't think I've ever been as angry about the officials after we've won , but win we did ! UTM

Apart from Wiles effort and goal. They should have been 3 up. But much better 2nd half, and had chances to be not clinging on at the end. Bolton taking an hit on goal difference, making us effectively 4points off bottom 3
Plus we beat the Stubbsy record 2 seasons ago, as now on 25 points. Now to beat Ronnie Moore 2005 29 points I think.
