    Cambridge Tactics

Although the performance yesterday was woeful at best, I think Ardley has to take some blame. Constantly booting the ball (often over hit by the keeper) up to Stead without support was always going to be a no win situation. We have to play to players strengths to get something out of a game. We really need Enzio and Hemmings back and start attacking play to our forwards strengths to get results.

PS: Saw TeamTalk again this week and CMP thought Dennis was unfit and overweight?

CMP is being too kind, he also doesn’t have a first touch and is so low on confidence you can only feel sorry for him but at present he is not a player we should be playing.

Notts drop far too deep when they defend and never seem to have an outlet option which results in the hoof up field to an isolated forward who is being marked by two or three men. Even when we are building from the back, we seem clueless. The slow tempo at which we play means that the opposition is rarely on the back foot. Lack of movement off the ball to create space and a dearth of tactical acumen, creativity and overall footballing nous means we are too predictable and easy to read. We give the ball away far too easily and always look vulnerable when the opposition is on the attack regardless of who they are, and we have entertained some absolute dross this season.......but unfortunately, we have been worse.

I agree with every word, especially defending far too deeply. Too many players trying to help out means somebody is in the way, two players leave it to each other, no-one out there to pass to, the goalie can't see or finds it hard to come out, opposition midfielders mob the edge of the penalty area. Eventually or hopefully, our goalkeeper catches the ball but has to wait while oppo strikers retreat, our midfielders move out looking for space (ha, ha), our strikers trot forward and the opposition have plenty of time to organise and mark up.

If we had wingers with pace, more mobile midfielders and a proper target man it would mean their defence dare not come too far forward, oppo midfield holding back a bit, a variation of not so predictable tacitics and our now famous "Big Boot" could have some effect.

Tony & Laxton - spot on. It is fairly simple stuff. We lack pace all over the pitch, we have no creativity and we have had to persist with a plethora of midfielders who can't actually do the basics. We have powder puff forwards: Stead who spends most of the game on his backside, falling over trying to win fk's & not challenging for aerial balls: Dennis, who is only dangerous, if at all, 3 yard from goal and is so easy to mark it is untrue &, when fit, Hemmings, who is abustling grafter with a modicum of skill but not a prolific score nor a constant thorn in any defence's sides. Opponents go past us like we aren't there and we go sideways and backwards when in possession rather than forwards.

The defence is under constant pressure because we cant hold a ball up and there is a huge gap between midfield and the front players. We end up siting deep, inviting the opposition on to us and, usually, succumbing as we tire towards the end of the game.

Lack of alertness, sharpness, fitness and skill seem to be the mnajpr shortfalls!

The lack of creativity among our midfield players is extraordinary. Yet, still soepeopl try to defnd Hewitt - i'm t sure who told that youth he could make it as a footballer because he is, and walsy has been, utter tripe.
