    United 4 Reading 0 - report

It was another home victory for the Blades and six on the bounce at the Lane with 14 scored and only one conceded in the process. United won at a canter beating a woeful Reading side with a goal inside the first minute and they never looked back. Kieron Freeman’s early goal was added to by a Gary Madine double and a John Fleck deflected effort made it four before the hour mark. United cut the Royals to shreds and time after time got through their defence who oddly continued to try and play the ball out even when in arrears. In truth if were not for the keeper and some better finishing; it actually could have been double the score line it ended up. It was a crucial win with both Norwich and West Brom winning away but with Leeds not playing; United are now back in second place.

Manager Wilder made more chances and some surprise one. Basham was suspended still and O’Connell and Baldock were not risked with injuries and deemed not to have recovered. However, United also changed both the front two with Hogan and Madine starting for McGoldrick and Sharp. Marvin Johnson and Kieron Freeman also came in at wing backs as there were four changes all told. United had good options on the bench to call on if needed. Reading began with some real attacking threats and pace and some talented Premier League loan players involved and still had the likes of Swift, McLeary, O’Shea, Gunter and Bodvarssön on the bench.

It was a rip-roaring start for the Blades as they surged out of the gates and took the lead in the first minute. The ball was played up to Madine who expertly held it up and played in Duffy who with time and space sent over an inviting ball that cut out the keeper and defence. FREEMAN came in at the back post and under pressure from a defender did just enough to turn the ball home. It was a dream start and the visitors looked shell shocked.

United continued to bomb forward and Madine nearly fed Hogan with an intelligent knock down. Duffy was involved in most good things and both wing backs were well advanced. United won a corner and nearly made it two. Some clever head tennis saw Madine and Cranie actually head it into the path of Stevens who had to score but headed over. It was a great chance.

Norwood caught Kelly on half way after Fleck had lost the ball and was booked making it 9 for the season and one away from suspension. This was a rare poor moment for the excellent Blades who were rampant and came again. Madine won a header from Johnson’s cross but the ball was cleared but the second goal was not long in coming.

Reading had been trying to play it out and the keepers short pass out was robbed by Fleck who knocked it forward. Hogan wisely did not get involved as he would have been offside and the ball fell to MADINE who smashed it home to the delight of the crowd.

Just before the goal Kelly had pulled up and he had to be replaced by Swift in another blow to the visitors who had seen things go from bad to worse.

It was all United and Fleck playing very well came forward and hit a low shot that Martinez saved down to his left. Reading had barely had an attack but they did finally get forward and Barrow shot over before they won a corner but despite them having a better spell they did not create much. They continued to try and pass the ball out and Duffy robbed his man. The cross was headed down by Madine but Hogan could not quite get there. The two strikers were combining really well.

A delightful move led to the third goal. Several passes were exchanged before the ball was knocked between Norwood and Fleck before Johnson came onto it. His cross was met by Hogan who looked to turn it goalwards but it was blocked. It fell perfectly for MADINE who again smashed it high into the net for his second goal. After not scoring for almost a year; it was like buses for the big ‘popular’ striker!

At half time Bodvarssön came on for Ejaria but it was not long before United put the game out of sight; at least for those worried about a Villa type turnaround!

FLECK came onto the ball and hit a low shot that deflected off Miazga and sent the keeper the wrong way before nestling into the net.

Even after this goal United kept coming. Norwood hit a powerful shot well saved after more touch and move football that fashioned the chance. It was continuing to be all United in terms of chances even if Reading did finally have a bit more of the ball and half hearted appeals for a penalty when Yiadom went down.

Johnson had two chances as he expertly found space but could not make either count. The first was another great move although Norwood’s final pass was probably a touch heavy and the loanee hit it into the side netting instead of going across goal. On his next chance he did this but the keeper Martinez made a great save pushing away.

Hogan nearly got in but his shot was blocked by Moore after good work from Madine yet again to find him. Duffy then made a great tackle and linked well with Fleck before the big striker could not quite get on the end of things. Cranie was booked as he upended the Reading player on the angle.

Norwood was given a rare opportunity for a breather and already on a yellow; Paul Coutts was given the armband as he replaced him and the final 20 minutes of the game. Oliveira was replaced by McCleary as Reading maybe sensed they would be better not risking a key man with the game effectively finished.

Swift cynically chopped Hogan down as he looked to get away down the left and soon after United kept pulling Reading apart and another nice move saw Duffy’s slide rule pass dissect the Reading defence and Hogan was in. He tried to loft it over the keeper but he made a super save tipping it over the bar.

Freeman pulled up with what seemed like cramp at first but was actually more than that and he seemed to have strained something and Stearman came on in his place with Cranie moving to right wing back.

Dowell came on for Madine soon after the big striker had chased down a defender to make a tackle out wide and seemed to pick up a slight knock but actually seemed fine as he went off as four sides of the Lane gave him a standing ovation; something that no one inside the ground could ever have forseen!

Reading had not had a chance but after Duffy was robbed Baker sprinted forward and worked space to hit a powerful shot but Henderson with his first notable save of the game tipped it round the post. The corner came to nothing and United fashioned another half chance but again Hogan was crowed out as the game went into three minutes of stoppage time. Reading won a free kick in a dangerous position but Baker’s effort was watched wide by Henderson. The final whistle came not long after and the contrasting reactions of the players and fans told a story as United jumped back into the automatic promotion places.

United – Really good performance. Excellent in fact! Scored very early, scored another on the quarter of an hour and then looked like scoring every time we attacked first half. We completely blew Reading away and then got a third. We could have had many more. Reading could not live with us as we pressed them high up the field and surged all over them. Madine was an absolute handful all day and Hogan also fitted in seamlessly. Both were very good and pulled the defence all over. Duffy was hard working as well as creative and Fleck was really back to his best. Even Marvin Johnson had a steady game with some good crosses and a few efforts on goal. It was a real team performance with no one playing poorly. The only slight negative was the daft booking for Norwood which puts him on 9 bookings and rea threat of missing Wednesday (West Brom the bigger game in terms of standings but know where I would like him to definitely play but cannot see him resting him against West Brom and bringing Coutts in). The defence was solid and we kept another clean sheet.

We played some delightful football and once we worked out Reading’s achilles heel in terms of trying to play it out, we won the first and second balls and then just moved it about. We were forward thinking when we could and did not overpass but when we could we moved it about and pulled them apart. We found the perfect mix of getting it forward and utilising the hold up and skill of Madine and Hogan but also those little triangles and combination play we do so well too. At times it was a joy to watch. If we had been a bit more clinical 2nd half it could have been a lot more. They were a well beaten side.

Many of us may have groaned when we saw the changes with Sharp out also but Wilder spoke about us having some freshness and having four new players in (wing backs and strikers) gave us these extra legs that we may not have had if we had left it or not changed as many.

Today was a potential banana skin and not only did we deal with it comfortably but we were ruthless too. We looked a really good side and you could see why one of the teams are contending for promotion but the other are in a relegation scrap.

We now look a much better squad. I was concerned after the Barnet game as no one took their chance but the last two games we have seen Stearman, Cranie, Johnson, Freeman, Coutts and Dowell all play their part in two big home wins; albeit in different circumstances.

We have two very different away games now. West Brom could go above us if they win at QPR in the week in their game in hand against a rapidly deteriorating QPR side but we also could put some distance between us. We now have a handy lead in terms of the play off places but of course we are now right back in the top two mix. Leeds have a game in hand but nice to be back in those positions for now. We really do have a chance. If we can get a result next week (take a draw) and turn them lot over the week after then we have two home games to come after that and would have a great chance. I think whatever happens we just need to enjoy it. We have a superb manager. A team playing great football. They all try their best and we are entertaining. Not sure we can ask for much more than that.

Reading – Woeful really from start to finish. They had a mini spell for 10 minutes in the first half where they passed it about and won a few corners but did nothing with it and then a shot on 85 minutes Henderson saved and a free kick wide. A few other moves were cleared but outside of that they were soundly beaten. Conceded first minutes as they did not mark, pick up or react and this set the scene for a defensive horror show. They reminded me of the David Weir side where they just kept trying to pass it out of the back. Wilder had seen this and we pounced every time wit players snapping at them. This led to the second goal with a ridiculous turnover of possession. They carried on undeterred after this goal and this led to more chances for us. It was ridiculous.

They gave it away time after time and it meant as they did, they were then so deep so Madine and Hogan could play right up the last defender/keeper. When they did move it out, they gave it away in midfield. We looked like creating a chance every time we attacked. The manager threw his hands in the air after a few free kicks were not given but in truth they were masters of their own downfall. He should have changed the shape, formation or how they were playing at 1-0 but did not. At 2-0 he did not and it continued. They deserved everything they got for a woeful approach. Even at 4-0 they did not really change this stupid tactic. We had so much time on the ball and although we played very well; it was like a practice game once we picked them off and moved them about all game. If they had lost by even more, they could not have complained.

They have a few loan players with the more well-known Oliveira the striker from Norwich, defender Matt Miazga and the midfielder Lewis Baker from Chelsea and Ovie Ejara on loan from Liverpool. They still have Aluko around who is a real threat when I have seen him but seems to be heading to China this month. They lack experience really and I know O’Shea is old but he may have got them organised. I assume McShane another experienced lad is out injured. They looked all at sea at the back but it was if they would be fined if they dare kick it long or try and move it on rather than the possession stuff that often did not go out of the box and got them into trouble. Like us under Weir we did not have the players good enough to do that – and Neil Collins and the lads Reading have cannot so what Man City do!

They were down near the bottom last season and are again this year but the only saving grace is that they will survive I feel just as the bottom three are so poor and Rotherham as well as they have done toss away winnable situations. They face Rotherham next week and that is a crucial game. I expect they will win this at home but if they don’t then you worry for them. You look at the side and they still have enough pace in the forward and goals but the defence and the approach of the manager is a worry. I am not sure having him and his lack of experience of the Championship is helping them. They were going nowhere under Clement but someone like Mick McCarthy even short term would have been preferable I feel even if they have picked up a bit recently. They folded like a pack of cards today and had no real fight or leadership allied to being outplayed and outballed.

Opponent man of the match – Martinez made an error early and did not convince but had little chance on the goals and then he actually made some good saves second half to keep them respectable-ish. The lad Swift is a good player that is not used properly (I like Kelly who he came on for too) but the stupid tactics meant by the time he often got the ball men were on him. He would do better in a decent side. The rest of the side were abysmal on and off the ball save for a few flashes from The two lads Barrow and Meite who flanked Nelson Oliveira showed a bit of pace at times and got away from us a few times but by this time we were in control. I liked the way we gave them a kick when/if they got away and stopped them penetrating much. Not sure either had much service. The lad on the right had a decent spring in the air for a smaller player. Oliveira must have been fed up as he fed off scraps. They were playing about it with it so much at the back he never saw it as they either lost it or took an age to even get to midfield.

Weak link – Not sure really but may say something I don’t normally do and pick someone who did not play. It was the manager for me rather than individuals – many players were poor of course! His tactics were baffling. Sure, the defender and keeper made mistakes but had obviously been told to play like that. They just kept doing it time after time. It was bizarre. Richards and Yiadom played wing back but never got out of their own half. The Moore was highly rated 12-18 months ago but being part of a team fighting against relegation has probably seen his stock plummet. He was poor today and our front lads ran him and the other defenders ragged. They had no organisation. They were not marking and often two would come out and the other would stay back and vice versa. It was kamikaze defending. They did not offer much at all going forward and gave it away a lot all over the field. On and off the ball they were soundly beaten.

Henderson 7/10 – Little to do first half at all. I am not sure he had anything to do other than a few kick outs. It carried on 2nd half as he intercepted a few through balls but the first shot they had I think was on 85 minutes. This was a long ranger and a really good save. He then saw a curler and a free kick go wide but it was a really easy game for him.

Freeman 7/10 – Was surprised he played as he seemed to be in the dog house not even being on the bench at times in recent weeks after the Barnet game and Baldock getting in and staying in before Xmas. He did what he does well, which is get forward and be a goal threat. He scored in a minute as he anticipated well and bundled home and then had another great jinking run which nearly led to a chance. He also made another clever run and cross as he was a real threat. Defensively he did ok and 2nd half did not get forward as much as we saw the game out but pleasing that he showed he was back to the form he can show. He does offer that goal threat which Baldock does not. I would still restore Baldock at WBA as against good and pacey wingers, he struggles to defend – got done with a reverse ball after a give-away first half as an example but that is nit picking.

Johnson 7/10 – Did ok today. At times he still makes poor decisions on and off the ball and does not seem the most intelligent footballer as runs behind players or plays passes where players do not run. However, he was good first half. He got to the ball first defensively and showed his pace. He put in several excellent crosses and we nearly scored from a few and did scored with the third one. Second half his running and overlapping was a real outlet and he got forward more than Freeman. He should have scored – the first chance he was pushed a bit wide but went near post and was wide and then he did go across the keeper but he made a good save. Maybe the best he has played for United but I will argue it is the first time he has started a game when many of the other normal players have played and he could feed off some of the passes.

Stevens 7/10 – Played a steady game in an unfamiliar left centre back position but he got to the ball first several times and still got forward. Should have scored with a header after the head tennis in the box. Against some pacey players he stuck to his task and felt he read the game really well and can come onto it more at centre back; technically he is much better than we probably think and a really solid top end Championship defender that has shown his versatility this week.

Egan 7/10 – Steady performance where he faced a different opponent to the mid-week Boro game. Oliveira was a bit trickier and more mobile than Hugill but Egan dealt with him well. He did not have too much to do in terms of crosses or through balls but got a few foot ins when he had to and was just reliable and made no mistakes of note.

Cranie 7/10 – As above and felt he also used the ball well and actually came forward and stepped out. He did pick up a clumsy booking (had been warned first half) but he has been really solid the last two games and done a sterling job. Will probably have to play bits and pieces in the run in but a handy lad to have about as he can play both centre back and right back/wing back as he showed today in one game.

Fleck 8/10 – Back to his best. The weak parts were him giving it away a few times actually including one that led to the Norwood booking but he was able to do lots of things we have not seen as much from him today. Made a number of superb tackles and his break up led to the 2nd goal but he also was driving forward and surging at the defence and drew men. He seemed to find some energy from somewhere and looked a new player today than someone who had been a bit leggy at times this season. Even 2nd half he kept bursting forward and was involved in some lovely moves.

Norwood 7/10 – He moved it about when he could and was steady if not spectacular. Some lovely crossfield balls and helped us control the ball. He was a bit more defensive as we pressed so high up not all three could go so had to have some discipline. Took some clever free kicks (we nearly scored with one 2nd half). Only real negative is his defensive play. He did make a few good tackles second half actually but a silly one first half led to another booking and at times he lets men run off him. I love him and Fleck but their weaknesses are not scoring goals or enough goals and letting quick midfield runners run off them with and without the ball.

Duffy 7.5/10 – Thought he worked so hard today and dispelled the myth he does not track back or do other bits to his game. On the ball he prompted and probed and his lovely ball made the first goal. He was also involved and I felt a constant threat as they could not pick him up. It did not help Reading that they had defenders so deep receiving the ball so this created a lot of space between the defence and midfield which he exploited. He ran back a lot and won a lot of tackles also and not sure he dropped off at all and felt he kept his discipline today and completed 90 minutes which is a rarity!

Hogan 7.5/10 - Only thing missing really was a goal. He linked well with Madine and held it up well but also ran the channels and was able to be a real outlet. He was a nuisance all game and showed good upper body strength to hold people off but also quite quick over a few yards (not lightening). He plays on defenders’ shoulder and 2 or 3 times got in but he either could not quite get his shot away or when he got in the keeper made a great save. Really impressive debut to say he has not played much and looked quite fit really.

Madine 8/10 – Deserved Man of the Match. Involved all the time. He is far more mobile than I thought and led the line superbly. We did not just punt it to him and actually played to his chest and feet a lot. Everything stuck to him and when he had to go for it in the air, he won everything too. Their defence never had a moment. Such good upper body strength and worked so hard chasing back too. He showed some lovely touches and then of course ruthlessly smashed home two opportunistic goals. A great performance. With McGoldrick and Sharp doing so well; it will be a tough call next week but not sure how he can leave him out really after that display.

    Subs –

Coutts – Perfect game to come on as we played keep ball. Did ok today and actually came out of a few areas cleverly with the ball and helped us on the attack. Got his foot in and did look a bit more mobile. Inevitable he will get some games with Norwood getting suspended sooner rather than later so we will need him to be like this in games when we are not already running away with it but today was a positive sign after it being a bit stop start for him.

Stearman – Just came on and did a steady job really but the game was up at this stage and we had kind of settled and they had kind of settled at not conceding more.

Dowell – Did not have long to make an impact really. Not sure he touched it that much in the time he was on.

Wilder 8.5/10 – Made the big calls and also, we were missing 3 key defenders again. Indeed, you could argue we had 5 of our normal starters missing; so, half a team out in terms of the best eleven we normally pick. Well, his calls worked as the players brought in did well; the front two were excellent and we had energy from start to finish after a touch game in the week against a physical side. The coaching staff had clearly pinpointed Reading’s weakness and exploited t from the start and we pressed high and they coughed it up time after time. We looked like scoring every attack first half and they had no answer. I do love the fact we kept to the pedal down and second half we kept our shape and ethos but still maintained attacks and he was constantly seen asking the defence to push out.

Referee – Fine really. I have a new feature which is ‘Uncle Bob decides what kind of ref it will be from how he runs out.’ Today my Uncle saw him skipping out (the one in the week had a funny little run and was thus going to be fussy) and said he will be ok and keep up with play and let things go. He kind of called it. He did play the advantage when he could and despite the Reading manager furiously waving his hands around for one decision (loved the Blades fans in the South Stand near the bottom all mocking him as he did this) he did not really affect the games. The bookings were all right really – he had warned Cranie before in the first half. It was not a game where the officials will be mentioned as it was so one sided but Gomes did and talked about some mythical foul in the build up to one of the goals but Fleck won it cleanly and not sure what he was seeing really.

Crowd/Fans – 26,513 and Reading did not bring many at all. The Bramall Lane Upper tier seemed almost full – were there some ticket offers today? Definitely a bigger crowd then I thought against a not so attractive opponent. I expect crowds to push towards capacity hopefully as we moved into the final part of the season and an exciting run in. The crowd were buoyed within the first minute of the goal and it meant the volume was high as United turned in a superb performance really with some lovely play and chances galore. 2nd half it became a bit more muted but only because the game was done but the fans were appreciative and recognised the team’s level of play and how they moved the ball about. Some were asking for more but I think we had the right balance and created chances right to the end really and another day 3 or 4 more goals are scored. We were sensible in that we did not go mad conscious of Villa but also played it forward when we could and it was a nice balance. There were chants of ‘The Blades are going up and now you are going to believe us!’ for the first time at the Lane which is of course wishful thinking at this stage but shows the belief in this side if growing. Also, Madine got a few chants and a great reception when he came off as the crowd appreciated his play and effort.

Watched Reading’s players go up the 500 or so fans who had travelled and their reaction reminded me of some days when I watched United in League One (again under Weir – Carlisle away sticks out when they came over and were met with derision on full time). Basically, they came over and clapped and they just booed and rodded them. Moore the captain to be fair tried to apologise and went over and put his hand up to say sorry but the fans just surged forward and wanted a piece of him even more! At this point he gave up and just trudged off. They had picked up but to go all the way and the game was done after quarter of an hour really.

Not sure what happened with that fan – who resembled a ball boy with a vest on – when he ran on the pitch. Too much beer but will probably see him banned now. Odd what some people do. Was it a bet of some sort?

Overall, a really good day again and making the Lane a fortress as we are will be key if we are to go up.
