Thread: Very promising

    Very promising

After the glee of not only beating Hearts, but doing so in injury-time and with a comical goal wears down, I reckon those at Fir Park will consider today - lucky as it was - much more significant for our medium-term future than any of the last five wins.

Obviously our situation at Christmas made getting wins by any means at all an absolute priority and we can be relieved to have done that.

But we were only playing dross and only beating them (usually) by the odd goal at that.

Hearts - even with some injuries - are a different prospect. They are a genuine European contender, are physically strong and have a handful of very good players.

Now even if we'd lost a late goal today, and being honest the game could have gone either way, we completely matched them for 90 minutes. Despite playing a side which was not hopeless like recent opposition, we fought when we had to fight, played football when we could and carved out several chances.

We shouldn't get carried away but today was real evidence that not only might next season not be totally miserable, it could really be worth watching.

Keeping hold of our young players for next season will be key I think, I know a couple have signed contract extensions but if a decent offer comes in we will sell. We do have a the makings of a really good side and playing the game the correct way really does make it easier on the eye also. You have also got to give credit to Robinson for the way he has changed things around, I know it kind of fell into his lap a bit but he was brave enough to change things around. If McGhee was still there that stubborn git would never admit to getting anything wrong and continue as is. As for the glee after the injury time goal against Hearts.....That will take a bit of time to wear down...

Thought we just shaded it today. A contrast in styles between our football and Hearts' hoofball. Although the Jam Tarts were missiong a few players so were we. Jake Hastie's opener was a cracker although it stemmed from very poor defending. As for our late winner, Turnbull's free kick was taken well and dangerous, bouncing as it did just in front of Doyle. Hearts aren't the best footballing side in the league but they are physical and powerful and we'll be nursing a few bumps and bruises tonight. The young brigade certainly delivered today.

Agree with all of the above posts, felt we played with a higher tempo and a belief that we could beat Hearts. Maybe for once we got the bit of luck that had deserted us in games earlier in the season. Thought the win was no more than we deserved and to see Naismith’s face when we scored the winner was worth the entrance money alone Also have to saythought the Hearts fans were a disgrace at the two moments of applause for the two recently departed Well fans

One of Robinson's main strengths has always been the ability to put the team ahead of his own pride...how often have fans (of all clubs) lamented some diddy getting time because he was the manager's pet signing? At our level we're always going to make some signing mistakes but holding your hands up on Fisher, ATS, (it seems) Donnelly rather than persisting with them is a massive plus. Robinson reminds me a lot of Tommy McLean in that respect and you're completely right about McGhee doing the complete opposite (although he did chuck in at least a couple of youngsters from memory).

Partially agree but he brought the ‘diddies’ to club and assume had every intention of playing.
Let’s not forget Connor Sammon and assume to continue his tactic of long ball style.
What made him change his mind ? A tactics football book for Christmas as January he saw the light !
Robinson has got a reprieve and down to someone convincing him play the youth and everyone now enjoying what we see.
Recent results are proof this tactic works. McCormack could become an enigma ... remember him ?

McCormack has apparently put his back out trying to pick up his wages

Sure but there is not a club anywhere in the world which doesn't make bad signings and when you're operating in the bargain basement the percentage of failures will always be higher than when you can buy proven quality. The reaction to the mistake is more important than the mistake itself.

Have the salaries of his mistakes gone ?
The money he squandered on phuds who never saw the light of day beggars belief.
I can only see club balancing books by selling those who have just broke into 1st team.

Feel free to point out a club or manager with a perfect signing record.

And balancing books by selling players has pretty much been our entire business plan for decades.
