    ACC Proposed Cutbacks

This is grim reading. It's depressing to read, mothballing all the libraries, bar Central. The time I spent as a kid in Torry library is a great memory. It would seem the city is free-falling to sh1thole status rapidly.

I wonder what the stats are on reading these days in the digital age. Obviously Kindles have had bad effect on real books. I Am guilty but if i didnt work offshore I wouldnt have one. I read my kindle inside and real books outside when at work.

But i dont know many people who read these days. The amount of people who say to me, "i dinna have the patience" is staggering.

People do other stuff now in the spare time. Look at the amount of folk glued to their phone playing games or whatever next time you are on a plane or bus. Back in the day that would have been a book. The digital age of facebook and other terrible inventions have made modern society pretty much mongos. My dad retired early partly because kids were getting really thick(he was a teacher)

My favourite shop and the only shop i use in town is waterstones. People find that wierd

So maybe the council are cutting costs but it also maybe the case thats its enforced by lack of reading by the modern person.

Reading is a dying art. Sad state of affairs

My day today is kid free so it will be spent with a book in hand and copious cups of tea. My idea of a good day

While I understand the tactile and aesthetic appeal of books there is no reason that digital couldn't replace paper and save some trees into the bargain. But Amazon in true mega company bully style will not allow their books to be downloaded at my local library. It's a nice facility and provides a lot of good things in the community (help with English for non speakers , help for the less able members of the community etc) but it is left with a few fading Meave Binchy's and a lot of reference books. Digital books could easily be time bombed for this facility but instead Gb worth of books do the rounds on work sites and no one actually benefits.
Interesting what your old man thought though back in the day primary schools in Scotland had a great reputation for providing the basics and my old man's generation (that left school at 14 in the main) had a very good grasp of basic grammar , spelling and arithmetic. Mine are average by comparison despite many more years of education and the latest lot appear fckd kwite frnkly lolz.

    Just aged myself I know!

I spent a lot of time in the library in Meldrum in my early ****s. Usually skinning up in the toilets out the back but still.

I couldn't use a kindle, i'm trying to cut down the time I spend staring at a screen. I used to get the digital version of the P+J, just didn't like it.

No it's been great. I really enjoyed that documentary with the long name. It took a bit of getting in to but really enjoyed it after. Got through a heap of films already.

Also watched a good whack of the wildboys and in to episode 4 of the Vietnam war doc.

Great post min. Nothing like sitting in my favourite spot in the hoose and reading a book, getting into the story. It fuels the imagination and is very relaxing.

Totally agree Edmonton. Sit in my spot, cat asleep on my knee, cup of tea/beer depending on the time of day and a book. Bloody hell i sound older than i am

On the topic of cuts, i was speaking to my mate who was telling me another cut is going to be lollipop mannies and wifies. Money before safety then. Pr@cks
