I remember the launderette now but needed Wacqos's clue to jog my memory. There was also Graham the barbers on the High St and the barbers at TB Watson shop down in the basement.

Ftivano1 and Auld Chippy you are both right about it being a launderette and throwing you the clue but roll back one.
What was it before a launderette? There is a connection if you can remember what shops existed between the BBBS and Thomsons the Jewellers on the High Street. Same company had a shop there too next to Lawsons the furniture shop and it is not Grieve's the travel agent.
Back to English Street. TB Watson had a barbers shop in the basement of the gents shop but where else did they have one?
And could I get a haircut any where else on English Street between the Barrel and Pioli's chip shop?

If I am correct the Liptons around there is where Conlons Optician is located now. It was a bit of a trick question because Liptons had a second shop on the Vennel as you go down on the right hand side. I think it is where the Chinese Restaurant is now. Fitvano1 has confirmed another one located in Queensberry Square.

Back to Butchers - Next to the old Kings Arms Hotel looking right was Netherton Dairy, Muirs the Hairdressers and if I am right Millers the Butcher. With J Kerr Little a few doors along next to the entry to the Globe.
Millers also had a shop at the Midsteeple which is currently Peter's/Gino's fish and chip shop. Does anyone remember them having the first of the chicken rottisserie's in the window in full view cooking away?
Was Turners a butcher or a fish shop? That's where Debenhams is now, also site of the Plaza Ballroom.
Over in Maxwelltown on Market Street, Jimmy Birrell had a butchers shop which is now those modern apartments. There might have been a bakers shop there too at one time. Shugg1e1919 is right of course about Sturgeons on Queen Street just down from Milligans the Baker and Jackie Law's the bookies. Jackie had 2 young laddies that played for the Queens.
Where exactly was Yardleys on English Street?
I left Stuart Houston out of the equation as he has always been over at Greenbrae. His Grandfather used to run a mobile van and it came out to Mouswald in the fifties when I was living there.
I love reflecting on the old shops in the town when it was a buzzing place with lots of character.
So, another taster. The Pancake Place on English Street across from the Barrel.
Again, back to the 60's. What was it called and more to the point it was one of the first shops to become a ?
See if you can clean that one up without getting wet!!
Thanks in confirming my thoughts in that Liptons did have a shop in English Street.Going by my dad,Yardleys would be where Galloway butchers is now,(or thereabouts) as when I was born we lived above there.Re. Turners...Don't think it was a fish shop.Only fish shop I can think of is Tosh next to Burns Statue, now Pearl Palace?

I seem to recall that one if the barbers in TB Watson walked with a "gammy" leg, I thought his name was Eric? Other memories of maybe not so far back are Wimpy's at Burns Statue, Dantes and Setti's down English Street. Dantes (now a take-away) is still in the same place but nothing like the coffee bar it was back then. There was another cafe down the Vennel next to what was Newalls Toy Shop, maybe Golden Arrow, but I think the building is now demolished and is access to the Whitesands car park. There was also Matthews Fish and Chip Restaurant, Hamiltons Shoe shop, Pearson's, Houston and Wilson Furniture Shop (Wilson branch was in Munches St I think).
