Who knows? If we finish 5th, then beat the Villa 5-0 in the first leg, it would all have worked out well, wouldn’t it? We could go to Villa Park in the first leg and get hammered 4 or 5 nil and then our much desired home leg would be a waste of time. So playing the strongest team against against Bolton, Millwall Blackburn etc. Has nothing to do with it?

Well they did. Bolton was first game of the season. Shan wasn't in charge then. But you can blame him for it if you want.
He won't get the sack. Worse case he'll drop back down.
