Personally, if he is one of the better options this weekend he needs to play/be in the squad. Notts can’t afford to look at beyond Saturday. The contract should not be an issue, from either party. It’s all about trying to keep Notts in the League.
In terms of triggering the contract extension, surely Ward could decline the option anyway? Does he want his last couple of years to be in the Conference, if that is where we end up.

That depends on what salary he is on if someone offers him £1.5k a week in league 2 but the contract at Notts is £2-3k a week Ward isn't going to care about what division he is in all he will be bothered about is who is paying him the most.

If you were in Ward shoes at the end of your career you are going to get as much money as you possible can.
