K2 is a massive beast of a climb too and there are some incredibly insane stories of incidents up there in recent years.

Seems like it's a free for all, and no organisation.
There is only a 2 week window to climb Everest each season unfortunately due to weather conditions that was reduced to around 4 days this year hence the queues.
Would make sense to install double glazing up there, naming rights already established.
Even if the whole two weeks had good weather, 381 permits is far too many. The Nepali government bears the ultimate responsibility for this mess, although many of the agencies selling guided visits are also totally irresponsible. If there happens to be a sudden deterioration in the weather when so many people are near the summit of the mountain, then there could be numerous fatalities.
