One of the things Rafa wants altered is the clubs policy of not buying players over 26.

I think the compromise on that stance would be...

Buy Rondon, Give Ritchie a new contract...

    Other signings to be younger...

Agreed. The two of them are older but proven in our team (that makes a big difference).

    Ominous is the right word...

The longer the talks go on, the greater the chance it's because fatso is refusing to budge....and it won't be long before Rafa says 'right, I've tried my best'...and walks off.

I tend to go the other way on this.If there was no chance of Rafa staying surely we would know by now.Why would talks last 3-4 days if fatty wasnt willing to compromise.Would only take Rafa 2 mins to tell him where to go.Cant see Rafa wasting his time if no progress was being made.
At least I am hoping this is the case.

Keith Downie from Sky says just that on Twitter...

If talks had not been positive, talks would have ended.

If Rafa is hanging on to a glimmer of hope that Fatso is going to give a bit of leeway we then have to wait and see if he keeps his word.

If he does keep his word it will be the first time this has happened and Rafa will have almost achieved the impossible.
