    Understudy/coach

A lot of chat about having an experienced coach and a young understudy to move into the hot seat when the manager moves.

Only thing I don't like about this is when the manager invariably gets sacked the number 2 either goes with him in solidarity or is seen as part of the team that's the problem in the 1st place and is punted as well.

The chances of the manager being a roaring success is slim and if he was a success may want to take the number 2 with him to pastures new.

Take Boyle for instance he must be regretting being persuaded to become McIntyres number 2, seen as part of the problem when he was probably well liked and respected for doing his original job with the Dee.

Always wondered this as well ,without knowing the pairs working demographic was the manager calling the shots or the assistant ,an example would be surely Archie Knox being No2 with Fergie I don't think for one minute he wouldn't pull him up if he thought he was wrong ,cut from the same cloth in a way ,probably didn't listen though...

Feel for Boyle caught up in a ****fest...

All managers say they don't want yes men but it does make me laugh that.....in an industry where people like their initials on their gear and to be called "boss or gaffer" I think a huge percentage do want yes men or their mates.

Not many assistants over the years who were famed for being great assistants.

Peter Taylor with Clough, Archie Knox with fergie and Smith, Miller with Liverpool, jocky Scott under Archie.

Was it Frank Upton who helped Donald McKay in the beginning? Em hopeless we names.

I'm assuming Bob Paisley was originally Shanklys understudy.

Only someone like John Nelms wouldn't see that Boyle wasn't brought in by McIntyre so shouldn't have fallen on the same sword. Maybe his original job was no longer available, but the distinction should have been made. It's not like Boyle had any say in what that dab prick was doing to the club

Sorry Peter, you backed mcintyre and still doing it, not for me, bud. Think about what's happened, Woods binned, Cammy captain, McIntyre refused to play young Robertson, you're needing to let go
