    Playoff survival rates

Tomorrow will see two teams fight for the money of the premier league, with 4 of the last 5 teams winning the championship playoff coming straight back down.

Survival rates improve outside the top flight, although as we seem to have bucked that trend, is it going to get harder for teams promoted via the playoffs outside the top flight.

Just three of the 29 teams promoted to the second tier from the third via the play-offs since 1990 have suffered instant relegation – Burnley in 1995, Yeovil in 2014 and Rotherham in the season just ended.

TV money has not imo been a boon to even the Prem clubs but it has made life very difficult for the EFL. The money has had an inflationary impact on wages and fees and many clubs have the same quality of player they had years ago but now have to pay them a great deal more. The adverse effect is that no club can afford to be relegated so over two-thirds of Prem clubs start of with the sole aim of staying up. They won't risk adventurous play and they won't risk a determined effort in the Cups. The losers are the fans of these clubs.
It is very surprising that only 3 clubs have suffered instant relegation from the Championship since 1990 - a very interesting fact.

I think it also depends on the size of the club who win the Championship Play Off Final , in my opinion Aston Villa are clearly better placed to survive in the PL than previous winners Fulham , Huddersfield and Blackpool for example .

You'd imagine Derby would have top weight on too if they are successful tomorrow despite being a decent sized club .

Agreed. It puts things into context when on Talksport this morning someone mentioned Crystal Palace would get £140 million next season and Georgie Bingham said; "But that's not much is it, not enough..." In the context of second rate players fetching £40m plus and earning £5m plus per year she was right. Crazy.

Shows that it should not be all that difficult to survive in the Championship, even though we didn't this season, and also ran it pretty close under SE.

That's a very good point. One possible reason might be that most seasons in the Championship, often due to financial overextension, there are 1 or 2 car crash clubs so a promoted club with the right attitude and playing the right way will have a better chance of survival than one might expect from resources alone. Not sure where we got it wrong though?

The TV money should be enough though.
It's only inadequate because clubs like Palace continue to pay daft transfer fees and wages
However much they are given they will just spend more and more.
Operating with Budgets they can't afford and sustain
