The most misused phrase in football is that clubs are looking for investors. What most clubs are actually relying upon is benefactors, who stand absolutely no chance of making money and every chance of losing it. You then take your chances as to whether your particular benefactor has good or bad luck/judgement, and in recent times we seem to have experienced the latter.

They do stand a tiny chance of reaching the land of milk and honey and cashing in but it is infinitesimally small. The Villa/Derby play off winner will 'earn' about £170m apparently.

True, but you would have to cash in pretty much immediately. The cost of staying in the Premier League far exceeds income for many clubs, which is why clubs like Bolton eventually come back down with huge debts. The land of milk and honey has very high rates!

It certainly does. It's killing football as I know and love it, where any fan of any club could dream of one day, with the right prudent but well-off owner, talented manager and one-decade-in-ten squad they could get to the top. Now it's rich men playing tiddlywinks with our dreams.

Of course if some sufficiently rich men get announced to be playing tiddlywinks with Notts fans dreams on Tuesday I'll do a U-turn and be all for it
