I attended the 2nd leg tie between Cardiff Metropolitan University v Progres Niederkorn from South West Luxembourg. The students qualified for this competition courtesy of a penalty shoot out in a play off at fellow Welsh league club Bala Town in a play off last season. They were also the first university team to represent this country in European football. They lost the first leg 1-0 over there, and although they won 2-1 last night it wasn’t’t enough to earn them a tie with Cork City in the next round. The visitors were more skilful, had better technique and fitter. They also didn’t panic when they went a goal behind, then two goals behind later in the game. You just knew that once they scored that would probably be the end of the contest. And so it proved. A great effort from the home team in front of 1300 people on a sun drenched evening at the Cardiff Athletic Stadium. ( across the main road from the stadium whose team have just gone back into the championship) Best of luck to the team from Luxembourg in the next round and plenty to look forward to for the students, despite being taught a lesson in European football over 180 minutes,
