Next up - Queen of the South

Motherwell travel to Dumfries on Saturday for the first game in Group E of the Betfred Cup. The tie offers a fine away day for 'Well fans who will hope to see the first win of the season. - External Link

I like the current format of the League Cup but the football staff must absolutely hate it. Given we can never do anything in the league, we can't afford to throw away the LC. At the same time, any team which is 100% ready to go by mid-July will be finishing very weakly come the end of the season.

We have generally just about got the balance right but we've been a little unlucky this year in getting the two tougher games, on paper at least, first. A professional job will hopefully deliver three points but I suspect it won't be pretty.

I'm not confident at all today and think this game is probably the worst one we could have started with.

Either a defeat in 90 minutes or on penalties, as we are hopeless at them.

I'm not pessimstic but yes the draw wasn't overly kind to us. Not the opener I'd have chosen.

If nothing else it will certainly show us were we are players wise for the season, not the easiest game to start with. Hope we are up for it from the first whistle to the last as the opposition certainly will
